Chapter 11

Archer signaled to Wolf they were ready. He inched into position, his scope sighted on the man standing in the front yard of the compound they‘d surrounded.

“Bravo One to Alpha One, we’re in position.”

“Alpha One to Alpha Two, it’s a go.”

Archer watched through the scope, making sure the guy he had his rifle trained on didn’t budge while Abe, Cookie, and Mozart advanced into the house from the back. Archer’s team was providing cover for the men who were breaching the building. The compound they were attacking had advanced security for most places in this area of the world, and the last thing any of them wanted was for Wolf’s team to be trapped in the compound with no way out.

They’d been in Bosnia for nine days. Once they apprehended the subject, they would head to Italy for a few days then back to the USA. He wanted to speak to Candace and find out how she was doing, but they’d been on since the moment they arrived and didn’t have a chance to chat with anyone at home.

Sugar had to feel the pinch. The man’s kid would be born soon, and Sugar wasn’t home to see the birth. Archer knew it was killing Sugar, but he wasn’t allowing it to affect his work.

Something inside the compound exploded. Archer didn’t hesitate and took out the man he had his rifle on. The guy dropped hard. Archer glanced around, seeing four other men in the dirt. His men had done exactly what they’d been trained to do.

“Alpha One, state your position.” Archer waited, praying the men hadn’t been harmed. Losing Wolf and his team would devastate the SEAL community. The seconds ticked by, and Archer’s anger increased.

“Alpha team has the package in tow.” The words from Wolf brought relief. “We have one team member who rung his bell. We’re coming out.”

Archer watched as Alpha team exited the building. A noise sounded behind Archer. He turned over just as something landed heavy where he’d been. He fired off a shot, his heart racing as he gasped.

“Watch your six, Bravo. We’ve got tangos in the wind.” Archer scrambled up and searched the area, looking for any more movement. His body was on high alert. Someone had tried to end him. If he hadn’t been paying attention, he would be dead.

Shit, that was close.

Candace would be pissed if he didn’t come home. Had he been distracted? No, he hadn’t. The attacker had just been silent. Next time, he would add in one more check to make sure they didn’t have anyone sneaking up on him.

Archer moved to the rendezvous point, forcing his body and mind to calm. They met up with Alpha team and made their way to the other side of the hill where a helicopter was supposed to pick them up at two in the morning. The area was dark, and the sky was full of stars. He missed home, missed his house, but most of all, he missed Candace. She was the reason to wake up in the morning and keep the world safe.
