{ Chapter 20 }

Silas walked into the room, holding a platter of bread and marmalade on his arm. He glanced down toward the floor the minute the door swung open. He wasn’t about to fall for Callum’s folly.

No tripping line. No escape plan waiting to be hatched.

A twinge of disappointment flickered in his chest. Georgina’s tenacity in escaping was admirable, and a small part of him was curious what she would try next.

Georgina was fast asleep in the chair by the fireplace, her neck awkwardly angled as though she’d fallen asleep sitting there, not planning ahead to make herself comfortable. She had put on one of his lawn shirts—he squinted at her legs folded half under her—and a pair of his trousers. She had ripped the bottom half off of each leg, so the ragged edges hit her shins.

A pang of guilt cut across his gut.

He shouldn’t have touched her. Much less kissed her. Much less had her writhing under his mouth and hands.

His cock twitched at the vision of her coming dancing through his mind. He shouldn’t have done it, but he’d damn well enjoyed it. Even if he’d hated himself afterward.

He lightened his steps so he wouldn’t wake her as he went to the desk to set the platter down. He glanced out the window. The morning light had given way to grey skies that threatened rain, but appeared to be holding steady against letting loose the smallest drop.

What had she been doing in his room by herself this last fortnight, save for tearing apart his wardrobe?

He turned around, looking about the room. Nothing much out of place. The mess on the floor from earlier now collected and wrapped in the cloth sitting by the door. His gaze ran over Georgina, and his look paused at her right fingers, noting the dark ink smudges soaked into her skin.

He turned back to the desk, his fingers absently tapping the wood top, and he noticed the ink in the inkwell was almost empty.

Interesting.

He checked in two of the drawers on the right side of the desk and found nothing. In the third drawer he opened, a stack of papers sat, the ink on them so full the sheets had warped with the wetness.

He pulled out the top several papers and lifted them closer to his face, studying the tight little script. Small and tiny, like Georgina had needed to write, but write a lot, so she had written as small as she could. Words flowed across the front, in between previously written lines, and up and down the edges on both sides of the paper until it was near to blacked out.
