Drake had worried that getting to the roof would be difficult, but he’d managed it earlier with no real problem at all. There was a plain wooden door secured with a flimsy padlock, and it had taken him less than a minute to get the door open and stride up onto the roof, 150 feet above the frozen earth. It had been a magnificent sight; up there were stars everywhere, a dazzling array indeed, and below was an orange cacophony of confusion and filthy living.

The clouds had come in and obscured the beauty above, and it seemed, amplified the ugliness below.

By the edge of the roof on the north side was a scaffold, something in place in case teams needed to descend to carry out repairs, he supposed. It looked robust, and it would do the job.
