He found Jack and Christian at the card tables later. Jack’s shirt hung open and a girl was attached to his side, her arm wrapped around him beneath the linen. Christian, who certainly did have cares, worries and a wife, had abandoned them all and was playing cards with Jack and two other men at the table, a small red-headed girl balanced on one knee helping him with his game.

Richard dropped into an empty seat. A servant appeared, wordlessly providing wine, and a side table was set next to him with sweetmeats.

“Do you want to play?” Jack asked.

Richard, stretching his feet before him, shook his head. His mind was, for once, comfortably empty, and he’d no desire to clutter it with the mechanics of a card game. Instead he drank and watched his brother and his friend. That a brothel should offer a feeling of home was outwardly wrong, but it was a feeling he was enjoying too much to analyse..

“I can see you’ve been treating yourself, Fitzwarren! Who’s the blond?” A voice as indolent as it was insolent asked from behind him.

Richard’s expression didn’t change. “Devereux. Did anything ever come out of your mouth that was not born from foul thoughts?”

A satisfied smile spread Myles’s mouth wide across his face. “I try my best.” There was an empty chair next to Richard and he flopped down into it uninvited, one leg hanging over the arm and the other booted foot rested on the chair, his knee drawn up to his chest. Devereux was swathed in black saturnine velvet slashed to expose the dark silk of his shirt, his wrists emerging from delicate fringed lace that lay just a little too far down the pale hands. Two of his men were standing a few paces away, confident and at ease. His appearance at the table had drawn the stares of Jack and Christian, but Myles was oblivious to everyone else in the room.

“Perhaps I shall join your game,” Devereux suddenly declared, raising a hand in the air. One of his men handed him a red velvet purse and the other moved the table closer to their master, marooning Christian’s and Jack’s cards.

Richard, sighing, collected in the cards, pulling the deck back together.

“Oh, you disapprove,” Myles said, his brows knitted and disappointment clinging to his words.

Richard silently cut the cards and was about to deal a round when Myles reached across and took the deck from him.

“In the name of fair play, I cannot allow you to deal,” Myles said smiling, then turning he held the cards towards Jack. “You deal, blondie.”

Jack, his eyes darting between Richard and Devereux, confusion on his face, was forced to rise and pull his chair closer to the table. Taking the offered pack he shuffled the suits and then dealt a neat hand amongst those seated around the table.

Richard won the first game and Myles the second. The conversation had stopped and the only noise was the clatter of coins on the wood.

Myles won the next game.
