Monika stared out of the window, refusing to get changed out of her bedclothes.

“Monika, you’re going to be late!” Her Papa called from the staircase; Anna was already downstairs, opening up the shop.

“I’m not going,” Monika said bluntly, arms folded.

“If you ever come back to school, I’ll kill you myself.”

Monika shivered, fear running through her.

“Why, are you not well?” Her Papa climbed the staircase and leaned the back of his hand against her forehead. “You don’t feel like you have a fever,”

“Nausea.” Monika’s heart twisted at the lie.

“All right, you get some sleep.” Her Papa leant down and kissed her on the forehead.

She had told him when she returned home last night that she had tripped, which was why her nose was bloody. Well, that wasn’t a lie. She just didn’t need to mention that Hans attacked her, leaving her ribs tender and bruised. She could barely walk without hissing in pain.

Monika had always had school as something to look forward to, something to immerse herself in to forget the worries of her life. But now, school was a worry, and she was terrified to ever set foot on the premises again.

What else will people take from her? She could deal with not being allowed in certain places, but to lose the one thing that kept her feeling alive? How was she going to obtain knowledge and be successful if that evil boy had cut her off from it?
