Patterns can emerge in many ways, so itâs best to let them form on their own. However, here are examples of higher-level categories that you might see, including the kind of statement youâd find in them:
Goals: âI try to clear off all the open items here before I leave for the day.â
Mental models (includes statements that demonstrate how users are mapping external experiences to internal thinking): âI use this online tool as my briefcase, for things I reference a lot but donât want to carry around with me.â
Ideas and feature requests: âI wish this would allow me to undo. I keep moving the whole folder accidentally and it takes me forever to cancel out of it.â
Frustrations: âIâd ask the help desk about this, but half the time they donât know what the problem is either.â
Workarounds: âThis takes so long to do here that I just end up printing out the list and working with it throughout the day. Then at the end of the day I enter in the results.â
Value statements: âThis tool here saves me a lot of time, so if youâre making changes donât take it away!â
Within these higher-level categories, youâll often find clusters that relate to specific steps in the flow or to different types of features and how theyâre used.
Figure 7.5 shows an example of a cluster from research that found several participants relied on reminders and push notifications to stay on top of their work.
