Printed in 1775 this map of the British battle plan was drawn by an officer at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Below the map appears a letter written by British General John Burgoyne to his nephew. The letter describes why the general felt “it was absolutely necessary to become masters of these heights.”

DECLARING INDEPENDENCE

Even before receiving King George’s reply, Congress knew there was little hope for the Olive Branch Petition. The delegates continued to debate. Many were against independence, simply wanting fair representation in Parliament. When King George refused to read their petition, however, talk of independence grew louder.
