With nowhere else to go, migrants camped on roadsides in California and other states.

Although only about 20 percent of the Dust Bowl migrants came from Oklahoma, all the migrants were commonly referred to as “Okies.”

The Oklahoma panhandle, one of the hardest hit areas of the Dust Bowl, lost 28 percent of its population over 10 years.

A FLOOD OF WORKERS

Employers looking for cheap labor gave handbills to migrants along Route 66. One handbill advertised, “Cotton Pickers: 5000 Families Wanted.”
