CHAPTER FIVE

Six o'clock in the morning. The sun rose on something akin to a battlefield. The band had long gone home. There were a few vehicles still parked in the paddock with their owners' or friends of the owners' feet sticking out of their windows. Inside the shed were several couples who had fallen asleep on hay bales they had dismantled to make themselves comfortable.

Outside the shed and grouped around the still well-fed fire were Harpic, Big Ernie, Harry, Maggot and three others from the club. Harry and Maggot had fallen asleep about three o'clock and had just joined the group, who had been yakking all night about various things.

'Whatchya going to do today, Harry?'

'Well, if I've got any skin left after Nana's had a go at me, I guess I'll be going shooting with Mike Harper,' replied Harry.

'Whereabouts?' asked Harpic.

'I'll take him down the river flats near the bridge where you guys have your parties. Tons of rabbits down there just now.'

Harpic could see an opening and he struck.

'Well, Harry, you just be bloody careful now. Don't want what happened to Dez, to happen to Harry, now do we, Ernie?'

The question hit Ernie totally unprepared. He hadn't a clue what Harpic was going on about but he threw his fuzzy mind into gear and came up with what he thought could be the correct answer.

'Er, no, quite right, Harpic. We certainly don't want that sort of thing to happen again. Er… to Dez, that is, eh?' sat back and hoped he'd done well. Harpic was always doing this sort of thing to him.

'What exactly are you getting at?' asked Harry, all innocence.

'Well, I mind the time when four of us went down to the flats and we were shooting in the same area. We'd dropped about thirty altogether and we decided to stop and have a few beers under the bridge. The girls we were trotting out at the time had arranged to meet us there and we were getting stuck into the froth when Dez decides he's going to have a leak behind one of the gorse bushes. So he disappeared. We were throwing compliments about the size of his dork to impress the girls when old Kevin picked up his bird gun and says, Til give the bastard a quick tickle up.'

'He lets fly in the general direction just as Dez steps out, shaking it. I think he was trying to impress the girls.' The listeners all leaned forward. This seemed to be a trait of any audience of Harpic's.

'You mean he shot him?'

'Sure did. Got him right in the goolies, or pretty close anyway.'

Time to do the slow light-up act on the cigarette. He dropped it on the wet grass and had to roll another. Harpic, at times, came so close to death as he carried out this time-consuming task, it wasn't funny. The audience hung on and reluctantly gave him a reprieve again.

'Ah, yes. Now, where was I?'

'Nuts!'

'Well, he dropped like a steer that's just been hit by a .
