PARKER

News spreads through school fast. Of course it does. It’s a huge story. Senior guy accused of killing a senior girl on prom night? Not just any guy and girl, either. The freaking prom king and queen of our school.

Most seem shocked by the accusation. I’m sticking with the few who believe he did it. Mario and Belle obviously had some history. And maybe it wasn’t all in the past. My stomach twists at the thought. She didn’t admit to putting worms in his crown, but I noticed a small paper bag stuffed in her purse earlier that night. I thought she was trying to sneak booze into the dance, but she just laughed when I asked about it. And she didn’t give me any other explanation.

The truth is, Mirabelle liked to mess with people. Mostly it was just her joking around—she’d get bored or frustrated or anxious and pull off these elaborate pranks to distract herself. Like when she put that Playboy photo in my book. Stupid stuff, innocent. But now I wonder if there was more to it. With the Playboy, Belle was pranking me because she liked me. So if she did put the worms in Mario’s crown…is it just further evidence that something was going on between them?

“Hey, Parker,” I hear behind me.

I turn from my open locker to find Jason standing there.

“Hey, how’s it going?” I ask.

“Rough day, man. I didn’t think you’d be here.”

“I can’t just sit around at home,” I tell him. “Grandma checking on me every ten minutes? Trying to get me to eat when my stomach is a mess? No way. I’d go batshit.”

“Look, I’m really sorry,” Jason says. “I just…I wanted you to know that. If there’s anything you need…”

“Yeah. Thanks.” I hesitate for a second, wondering if it’s wrong of me to ask him. And then I figure, what the hell do I have to lose. “Did you know anything about her and Mario?”

“What do you mean? I don’t think they were involved at all, if that’s what you’re asking. Though I’m curious, what’d she have to say about that kissing comment on Twitter? You ask her about that?”

“Yeah. I asked on the way to your house. She said they went out once like two years ago, and it was a disaster. I pushed her for more information, but then she shut down. The rest of the night, she barely talked to me. It was bizarre, man.”

“You know what else is bizarre?” Jason says. “Mario was with Elana. How could he have committed a crime when she was with him? Like, how is she free if she was there too?”

I grab my notebook and slam the locker door as the second lunch bell rings. “I don’t know, but if the evidence shows he did it, I hope they give him the death penalty. Actually, you know what? The more I think about it, the more I wish I could go to the trial and shoot the bastard myself.”

Jason and I have calc together, so we start walking that way.
