Chapter 12

The City

“Jay, explain to me how she got my password and username information. I’ve been trying to figure it out since-”

“Walter, calm down. Relax. Breathe. I don’t know how, but you changed your password, right? Got a completely new log in created?” Jayson ushered his friend onto the couch next to his desk. He had been upgraded to a new office when he received his promotion, but it was a similar set up to the office he previously had. The main difference was the location. It was a mirror image of the other room with the door on the opposite side. Also, it was on the opposite end of the office, just off the captain’s now.

As Walter sat down slowly unraveling his sanity, Jayson quietly waited beside him for a moment. Walter hadn’t let his emotions show in public since he figured out what Frankie had done. He bottled it up for months after discovering she was a serial killer living under an assumed name and sleeping in his bed almost every night.

The more he worked this case, the less sane he felt. It was his fault she got away with everything. It was his fault she was on the run instead of behind bars. He should have known. How could he not have seen all the signs?

“Walt, man. You can’t let this keep eating away at you, dawg.”

“We were together for years, Jay. Years. How could I not have known?”

“Do you think Jeffery Dahmer’s neighbor knew who he was? What about John Wayne Gacy? How about Harold Shipman? Ted Bundy?”

“There’s a common thread there though, you see that right?”

“Yeah, I see that, but the point is still the same. Frankie Roberts is a serial killer and she got away with murder for a long time before something gave her away. No one in those other people’s lives knew either. I know it’s not as helpful as you want it to be, but if you let your guilt or whatever this is consume you, then she is going to add another unwilling victim to her growing list.”

“How many female serial killers are known in history, Jayson?”

Jayson tilted his head to the side with such a longing to help his friend, but knew there was truly nothing in this moment that would make him feel better. To name the top 20 most notorious female serial killers wouldn’t help his friend, but to say nothing would seem cruel.

“We will find her, but in order to do that we need you on your A game, man.” He clapped him on his shoulder and Walter looked at him.

Really looked at him before pulling himself together. His spine went erect. The terror/frustration cocktail disappeared from his face and was replaced with determination and vigor. His mindset took a 180 and Jayson could tell he was back, even if it was just for the time being.

“Did you finish reviewing the list of files that were requested under your name?” Jayson asked.

“Yeah. I told you nothing else was requested after M’chelle’s.
