CHAPTER 11
***FREDDIE***
Freddieâs heart was singing as she drove Teddy to his secret riding lesson. After dinner at the hotel, the week had started with fresh inspiration. Drake seemed open to the idea of the riding school, and there was real hope the youngest Rolston brothers would figure out a business partnership. In fact, Drake had recruited Sutton to help on the horse ranch and that was why mid-week there was time for Teddy to work on his horse-riding skills.
Bethany waved to them from the far corner of the hotel. The old stable was a lot fancier than the barns on Drakeâs ranch, but the inside was quickly becoming familiar. Teddy headed straight to Novaâs stall and offered her a fresh apple.
âSutton is helping Drake settle the newest horses,â Bethany told Freddie. She had promised not to tell her best friend about the riding lessons. Luckily the men seemed busy trying to outdo each other in terms of hard work.
âI bet theyâre competing to see which one can handle the wildest horse,â Freddie said.
Bethany laughed. âEvery night, Sutton complains of how sore he is. Youâd think he wasnât raised on a ranch!â
The women grinned at each other. Ever since dinner, it seemed like the brothers could actually get along and, while that didnât make it any easier to hide the riding lessons, it made it seem more likely theyâd be forgiven.
âCan I start brushing Nova?â Teddy asked.
Freddie stepped forward. âRemember what Bethany said? You shouldnât get into the stall with Nova. She could press you against the walls and you would get hurt.â
Teddy frowned, insulted to be reminded of his small size, but he allowed Bethany to bring Nova out of the stall and tie her at the grooming hitch. Once she was out, Teddy was cautious around the large animal, and he mostly stood back and chatted while Bethany brushed her. Freddie was glad her young charge was respectful of the horse. She still worried that Teddy would get hurt and she would never be able to explain that to his overprotective father.
Bethany kept him involved even as he kept a safe distance. âCan you go get her bridle, please?â
Teddy ran off with a smile, glad to be helping, and Freddie had to admit she was softening towards Bethany. At first, she was put off by Bethanyâs perfect poise, but more and more, she was seeing the tomboy side of her new friend.
âMy sister always hated brushing horses,â Bethany said. She shook her head. âJane would start complaining the minute a horse hair touched her black jodhpurs.â
Freddie smiled. âI have about ten lint brushes in the truck so Drake doesnât spot any on Teddy.â
She was glad they were able to talk about Drakeâs ex. The more she heard about Jane, the more she was glad they had divorced. It seemed like Teddyâs mother was only interested in herself. Luckily, Bethany was the complete opposite. She adored her nephew and spent most of her time keeping Sutton focused. Now that she and Freddie had spent more time together, she had opened up.
