PART FIVE: JOSEPH THORNTON MAKES EVEN EASY PROBLEMS HARD FOR DARWIN

RICHARD LENSKI HAS BEEN PROBING THE LIMITS TO DARWINIAN evolution in the best way—by simply growing bacteria and watching what happens. Yet there are other valuable approaches, too. In my view the most rigorous and cleverest ones have been directed by Joseph Thornton, now a professor at the University of Chicago. Thornton has studied the abilities of similar modern proteins from different branches of life and compared them to their presumed ancient common ancestor protein—which he constructed (he calls it “resurrected”) in his own lab after comparing the modern ones. He got surprising results.
