“You look a little troubled.”

Isaac shook his head, one hand slamming down on Bradstock’s shoulder.

“Indeed, I am not,” he replied, as the music from the ballroom swam through the crowd, making its way towards Isaac and Bradstock. “I am not troubled,” he answered, as Lord Penrith stepped away, their conversation now at an end. “I assure you.”

Bradstock did not look entirely convinced, looking back at Isaac with a troubled gaze.

“Have you discovered something in Lady Maria’s character that does not satisfy you?” he asked, as Isaac frowned. “I know that to step away from her now would prove something of a difficulty.”

Isaac waved a hand, shaking his head as he did so.

“Indeed not!” he exclaimed, as his eyes alighted on the very young lady that he spoke of. “Lady Maria and I took a short walk in the park yesterday and I found nothing untoward at all.”

Bradstock’s brows lifted in evident surprise, although Isaac could not quite understand why.

“Indeed,” came the reply. “Well, I must say that I am very glad to hear it.”

“The reason you find me a little….” Isaac searched for the right word, “a little frustrated, mayhap, is solely to do with the news that harvests this year have been particularly poor. Lord Penrith came to speak to me of his estate,” he continued, turning so that he and Bradstock might make their way towards Lady Maria. “I was disheartened to hear of his difficulties.”

There was no time to explain further, for Lady Maria, Lady Hayward and Lady Sophia were near to them now and Isaac quickly bowed before making his greeting. Bradstock did the same, although Isaac did not miss the way that he continued to look towards Lady Sophia rather than smile amicably at all three ladies.

“I do hope that you have saved both dances for me, Lady Maria,” Isaac asked, one hand pressed lightly to his heart as he rose from his bow. “I must pray you have not forgotten.”

She laughed and lifted her wrist so that her dance card dangled from it.

“Indeed, I have not,” she answered, pulling the silk ribbon from her wrist and handing it to him. “If you will note, Lord Ridlington, I have already taken the liberty of placing your name upon the two dances you specifically requested.”

Fully aware of Bradstock’s interest in this particular remark, Isaac turned to the side a little more so that Bradstock was no longer able to hear as well.

“Wonderful,” he murmured, looking down at the dance card and seeing his name written on both the quadrille and the waltz. As he had feared, Lady Maria’s dance card was already quite full and, had he not asked her to do as he had done, then he might very well have found himself without her company for the rest of the evening. “Thank you.”

Bradstock asked Lady Sophia for her dance card and, of course, Isaac made certain to do so also, although he only placed his name down for one dance, taking the very last dance remaining.
