Chapter Six

Sherrie’s stomach felt as if she’d just plunged out of a plane. “Oh, Lord,” she muttered. “Now I’ve done it.”

“You’d better get up there and put him out of his misery,” Beryl said, her look of sympathy only making Sherrie feel worse.

She gulped as she prodded the button on the elevator. She was probably going to lose both jobs, she thought as the door slid open.

“Good luck!” Beryl called out as she hurried away. Sherrie wished she could go with her.

Lucy tugged her hand as the door closed and the. elevator soared to the sixth floor. “Is Daddy mad at us?” she asked.

Sherrie gave her a tense smile. “No, honey, he’s not mad at you.” He was likely to throw Mrs. Claus out the sixth-floor window, though, she added silently. Thinking furiously, she went over her conversation with the operator. It was hard to remember everything she said. Obviously she’d given Julie the wrong impression.

Stepping out into the hallway, Sherrie saw Matt’s door standing open. Lucy broke free and ran for the office, while Sherrie followed more slowly.

She heard Matt’s exclamation as Lucy ran into the office. When Sherrie reached the door she saw him standing by his desk, with Lucy held tight in his arms and his chin buried in his child’s blond curls.

Sherrie stood awkwardly in the doorway, until Lucy wriggled to get down. “Me and Sherrie went for a long ride,” she said as Matt turned slowly toward the door.

“Hi,” Sherrie said lamely, wincing when she saw the strain on his face.

“What happened?” he said hoarsely.

“I…we…got lost…kind of.”

Matt stared at her for a long, tense moment. “You got lost?” he said at last, his voice rising on the last word.

Sherrie nodded miserably. “I forgot to ask you where Lucy went to kindergarten and I called the store but you weren’t here and I didn’t want her to be late and she said she knew where it was and we were driving up and down…”

Matt moved to his chair and sank down. Reaching for the phone, he dialed a number, then said in a terse, crisp voice, “This is Matthew Blanchard. Please tell Officer Brooks that my daughter is safe and sound. Apparently there was a mistake in communications. Please tell him I am sorry to have bothered him.” He paused, then added dryly into the phone, “And wish all of you a Merry Christmas.” He put the receiver down again and leaned his head in his hands.

Sherrie looked back at him helplessly. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I asked the operator if she knew where Lucy went to school. She must have misunderstood.”

Matt nodded. “I called the kindergarten. When they said she hadn’t arrived, I thought—” He broke off and reached for his daughter to give her another tight hug.

“It wasn’t Sherrie’s fault,” Lucy said in a small voice. “I couldn’t find the school.”

“It’s all right, honey.” Matt dropped a kiss on his daughter’s head. “I’ll take you to school. Sherrie has work to do.”

Her heart lifted when she realized she still had the Mrs.
