7-30 P.M.

Rhona made her way to the drawing room, feeling apprehensive about seeing her husband after their confrontation. There was Rodrick the footman there who poured her a madeira as she waited for her spouse with bated breath.

When he had not arrived by 8 o clock and the butler appeared, to announce dinner, she made enquiries, “I do not know what is holding my husband up, Monkton, perhaps you should go and see what is holding him up.” She noticed that the man suddenly looked puzzled.

“The master has left for Norfolk an hour ago on urgent business, madam.”

Rhona suddenly had the overwhelming urge to cry. He had not even let her know he was leaving, but then why should he after the way she had behaved. She had refused him his dutiful rights and so he did not owe her any explanation. Well in that case, you had better serve dinner right away.”

“Of course, madam.”

After a delicious dinner which she had only picked at, she made her way back to her room where Essie was busy getting her nightclothes ready.

“Aw lass you’re here, I’ve heard about the master going to Norfolk, he could have waited a few days. He must have known it would look odd to the staff that he was leaving ye the day after yere wedding night.

Rhona’s lips bean to tremble, as she fell on the bed and started to sob.

Essie was soon by her side, Eeeh, las, dinna upset yeself now, besides isna better if he’s not here, ye said ye’d only married him to keep yere good name.”

“Then why am I crying, what’s wrong with me?”

“Perhaps yere fonder of the man than you are letting on. Ye told me at the inn you loved him. Love doesna disappear just cos ye want it to.”

Rhona turned and faced her maid tears streaming down her face, “oh Essie I’ve said it before and I’ll most likely say it again, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“And I said before, I’ll always be with ye, for as long as I have a breath in my body. Essie then went over to the bedside, drawer and took out a clean handkerchief. Now dry yere tears, lass. It’s not good to upset yerself in yere condition. Let me help ye undress and then I’ll go and get yere hot chocolate.”

Later, in bed, Rhona thought about what Essie had said earlier. She was right, Rhona had the baby to think about. She did not need to get herself upset. She felt her stomach, it was flat as now, but give it another few weeks and she would begin to show. Then he would have to know. She wondered how he would take the news that he was going to be a father. With the thought that she would soon be a mother, she began to relax and soon felt into a dreamless sleep.
