JP goes back to his room to make some calls while I decide to linger outside the hotel and people watch before going in. The walk was good for us. Even though we didn’t speak very much, I felt connected to him and somewhat comfortable thinking that my tryst with Logan won’t cause any problems. But it’s hard to tell. We talked about it without really talking about it. Like many other things in this organization, sometimes it’s better to deny, deny, deny. While I’m sure he suspects that I’ve been with Logan, I don’t imagine he wants the details. It’s my business.

We’re all planning to meet for lunch and review some additional aspects of the case. Before I’m about to return, JP sends a text asking me to meet at the small Chinese restaurant within walking distance from the hotel. He says Parker and Logan will be there. Since this country shares a border with China, it’s not unusual to find authentic Chinese cuisine here. I walk alone wearing a long white linen dress with a silk embroidered jacket. My hair’s pinned up and covered with a green print silk scarf. There’s the restaurant just ahead, and I notice the streets are mostly empty.

The eight-foot-high metal door opens as I pull on formidable brass handles and enter a dimly lit, almost café-like eatery. I can see Parker and Logan at a corner table located several feet away from a family with two young children. No one else is in the restaurant.

“Hi, Lily. I thought JP would be with you?” Logan says, seeing that I’m alone. “I just got here too.”

“No, I’m sure he’s on his way,” I tell him and then look over at Parker, who’s nibbling on something.

“Yeah,” Parker says with a mouthful of food. “Have a seat. I’m sure the ol’ man will be here soon. So look, I ordered some dishes for all of us to share. Have a seat and dig in,” he says, pointing to some bowls of soups, noodles and vegetables, and some kind of meat dish.

I’m glad JP’s not here to hear that. He doesn’t like it when Parker refers to him as the ol’ man. I settle into one of the wooden chairs, then pour myself some tea and wonder why the change of venue since we were going to meet back at the hotel.

“Parker, why are we having lunch here?”

Parker leans into me and speaks in a low voice. “Robinson, we thought maybe the optics were better if we looked a little more like tourists and less like operatives from another country,” Parker says, giving me a wink.

Are we being watched? If this country’s president was murdered, I expect that the murderer’s still out there. Parker makes a little small talk while we’re waiting for JP.

“So what do you do exactly, Dr. Pelletier?” Parker asks Logan.

“As a forensic pathologist? The usual. Investigate sudden and unexpected deaths. The autopsy usually determines the manner and cause of death. We give court testimony
