"I simply do not understand why you refuse to see her as a possible match," Oliver began again. He was growing tired of the conversation with William, but insisted to himself that he live up to his end of the agreement. The carriage ride to the ball had come to a halt as they waited in a long line of conveyances to be dropped at the steps of the stately townhome.

"And I simply do not understand why you insist that I do," William responded. "Evie has been like a sister to me for most of my life, and I cannot see her as anything else. Charlotte and Sophia would be thrilled, if I did, I’m sure, but I would as soon propose to one of them," William said with a laugh. "Besides, I am not ready to make a match yet."

"You wouldn't know it the way you carry on with Sarah Staunton," Oliver grumbled.

"Ah yes, she is lovely, is she not?" William sat up straighter in the carriage, clearly happy with the change of subject. "She is beautiful and sweet, and calm and has such grace; she is everything feminine. She is a marked contrast to the intensity of Evelyn."

"She is lovely," Oliver agreed graciously. To himself, he added, I for one, would prefer 'intensity' over triviality any day.

"I tell you, old friend, Miss Staunton could make even me consider the bonds of matrimony," William said, with a shake of his head.

They lapsed into comfortable silence, each no doubt thinking of a very different woman until they finally disembarked at the well-lit home.

Oliver watched William move through the center of the throng in the crowded ballroom greeting people as he went. He chose instead a much slower and quieter move around the edges of the ballroom. He smiled at many familiar faces and even greeted a few acquaintances, but his attendance at such events was more perfunctory than preference. He knew his presence would be important when he earnestly began seeking financial backing for his veterans’ home, so he made appearances and maintained friendships as much as possible.

He was debating with himself over how long he must stay to be proper when his gaze landed on a familiar trio of women. A pair of blonde-haired twins leaned in close with a red-haired companion, laughing at some shared joke or secret. Evelyn's orange dress made him smile, though he could not explain why. Charlotte and Sophia were the picture of the current fashion in their coordinated gray and pink gowns, with lavishly styled curls framing their face and ribbons woven throughout their coiffures. Evelyn's tresses had already begun breaking free of their confines including one particularly unruly curl that was currently standing straight up at the crown of her head.

As Evelyn stifled a laugh at something Sophia had said, she looked up and caught Oliver watching her. Was it his imagination or did she seem to smile bigger upon seeing him? He unwittingly matched her smile and moved towards her and her friends on the edge of the dance floor.
