Asher
The only positive to come out of the whole summer was the extra time Asher had to spend with Sadie. Asher made it a point to catch as many of Sadieâs tennis matches as he could, even if they were at the club. No one said anything to him, not after Camilleâs run in with Annette. But, he didnât miss the way the women stared at him. He wasnât sure if it was pity he saw in their eyes or disgust. He didnât let it deter him from being there for Sadie though.
Asher and Sadie had fallen into a steady routine. Asher drove her to her lessons most mornings and caught as many games as his schedule allowed. He took her out for a celebratory dinner whenever she won.
That night, Sadie chose pizza. Asher drove downtown with Sadie beside him. They pulled into Pepperoniâs parking lot just as Camilleâs name appeared on Sadieâs phone.
âMomâs calling,â Sadie said.
âTell her weâll be home in an hour.â Asher said turning the engine off.
Sadie answered the phone and told Camille their plans for dinner.
âIâll meet you down there. I want pizza too.â Camille said, she spoke so loudly, Asher could hear her, even with the phone pressed against Sadieâs ear.
âOkay, see you soon.â Sadie hung up and looked at her father.
âMom wants to come,â she said quietly.
âThatâs fine.â Asher bit into his cheek. He knew what Camille was doing. She was trying to worm her way in. She couldnât let them have their time together; she needed to try to control every situation, this was no different. Asher knew that Sadie sensed the tension between her parents, but he hoped that it wasnât affecting her too badly.
Pepperoniâs was crowded, the funky decor and hip music making it a local favorite, especially for the kids. They had a small arcade in the corner, that was filled with rowdy teenagers, blowing off steam. Asher steered Sadie towards the back of the restaurant, where they found a small table, and sat down.
Asher ordered a large cheese pie, and a large salad, with a pitcher of soda. Sadie poured herself a soda immediately. Camille never kept it in the house, so naturally it was a favorite treat of Sadieâs. Asher made small talk, complimenting Sadie on her win on the tennis court, and talking about the upcoming tournament.
Camille arrived just before the food was brought out to the table. She breezed through the small restaurant; her dark hair piled on top of her head in a bun. Pepperoniâs wasnât a place Camille typically frequented. She preferred high-end restaurants with exotic dishes, and valet parking.
She took a seat next to Sadie, and ignored Asher altogether. Asher watched as Camille looked all around her, most likely trying to think of a way this dinner out in public would benefit her. Asher knew her all too well, and Camille rarely went anywhere, unless she had an agenda.
âSo, youâre on track to make it into the tournament,â Asher said proudly. He looked at Sadie with a wink before he took a bite of his pizza.
