Chapter 6
Taking off the Edge
When the men returned to the house at dawn, Roxy was waiting for them with hot coffee and breakfast. She made them shower and took their clothes to wash them before she served them their food.
âYou didnât have to do this,â Bone said.
âI needed to do something. I felt like I was going insane otherwise,â she admitted.
âAnd are you really sure you want to stay?â Damon asked.
âYes. My mind is made up. Iâm not running anymore,â Roxy said firmly, although tears were streaming down her face.
âDid he hurt you badly?â Bone asked quietly.
âNo. You came so fast, he couldnât do much damage. He must not have realised you were even there in the house. After all, your bike is in the garage out of sight, there is nothing lying around that suggests Iâm not alone,â she said.
âWhat did that bastard do to you?â Bone asked.
Roxy lifted her top. There were purple bruises on her right breast in the shape of fingerprints.
âI am so sorry,â Damon groaned, not knowing how to stop himself from smashing something. The only thing holding him back was the knowledge that such an outburst would frighten Roxy even more and she had already been through enough.
âIt looks worse than it is,â she said quietly. âHonestly. You saved me from terrible pain. I know he would have tortured me in the most cruel way if it hadnât been for you.â
âIâm so sorry,â Bone said in a hoarse whisper, fighting tears himself.
Roxy reached out and pulled him close, drawing both men in to hold her and they stood that way for a long time before they sat down again and made Roxy eat something. She insisted on them eating, too, so they all had a few bites before the men told her she needed to sleep.
âWeâll check our contacts to find out about Boris and Igor and that cousin,â Bone said. âYou go to our bed and sleep.â
âI canât be there on my own. And where will you sleep? You look exhausted, too, and I know, Igor got you hard a few times. Let me at least tend to your wounds.â
Bone shook his head.
âDamon, go to bed with her, so she isnât alone. Just hold her so she can feel safe again. She needs to rest. Iâll clean up and talk to our guys.â
Damon nodded. His leg was killing him. Igor had kicked it viciously a few times and Roxy needed to have someone with her and hold her hand or even hold her in his arms. And he wouldnât mind being the one to do that, even if he would never dream of abusing her trust and vulnerability at this moment to get anything more out of her.
The fact that Roxy just nodded in agreement and didnât argue any further, spoke volumes of how she really felt. But once she lay in bed in his arms, she fell quickly into an exhausted sleep. Damon held her there but didnât sleep himself. He was waiting for Bone to finish cleaning up the blood and hear back from their contacts.
