“You know something don’t you?” Holly whispered, waking me from the stupor I'd been in, staring at the ceiling and wondering how we would get out of this alive.

“It’s my Da-” I gleaned the other direction at VD paying attention. It was too late to backtrack now. “It’s Dylan. He’s a Marine, he’ll figure out how to end this.”

Beside VD, Rita Van Dyke was weeping silently. He had comforted her a little when we heard the shots and Karl returned without his uncle.

Now he looked annoyed at me.

“Dammit, we can use this, why didn’t you tell me sooner? I’m not dying because your army man is acting the hero.”

Glancing up at Karl, I worried that they would clue into our conversion and demand answers.

“Marine.” I corrected under my breath. “You met him an hour ago and saw his uniform.”

My boss rolled his eyes, “Like I bother knowing if a uniform is real, and what type it is.”

“Plus, I didn’t know he was doing anything until just now with the radio.”

“Eddie, anything upstairs?” Karl asked for an update and my stomach tightened until I heard there was nothing yet.

My Daddy was too smart to get captured easily, though, so ignored the rest.

VD on the other hand, stood up.

“What the hell are you doing?” I tugged on his suit jacket and even Rita stopped crying to look at her son. “You can’t tell them who he is.”

“Don’t worry about it, kid,” VD pulled his jacket loose from my fingers, “I’m a master negotiator.”

Karl saw his cousin approaching and pulled a handgun, “Where do you think you're going?”

VD stopped in his tracks and held both hands up lazily. I could tell he had the self confident smirk back and I swallowed hard in fear. If VD told these men that the guy on the radio was my partner, I’d probably be shot next.

“I know who that guy on the radio is, and I thought we could work out a deal.”

“Who is he and what do you want, then?”

“He’s a guest of one of the sales guys, frat brother or something who didn’t know his buddy was out of the country,” VD bluffed with his smarmy sales tone, and I let out a sigh of relief."

Karl seemed to considers his cousin's words, but didn't speak.

“I know more, but I want you to let us all go. Or at least me and your aunt. Come on, we’re family.”

Before Karl could decide if he was going to shoot his cousin, a muffled ding came from down the hall where all the biggest offices were. It sounded like the express elevator.

“Hans, go check that out,” Karl barked into the radio, “Franz and Eddie, report back.”

Hans and Franz both responded with thick accents, and one of them walked back into the main space. Must be Franz, if the other one was down the hall. There was no response from Eddie, despite Karl calling for him again.

The sound of soft scraping came from the executives’ hall, and the sight that emerged had me almost losing my shit.
