Fortuneâs Den
Aldgate Street
Isabella was used to dining alone, not being the focus of five peopleâs attention. She was used to a basic bill of fare, not the range of sumptuous dishes laid out on the long oak table.
Of the four men who studied her intently, two made her heart race but for very different reasons. Under the weight of Aaron Chanceâs unforgiving gaze, she was aware of every drawn breath. Christianâs visual caresses had her fanning her cheeks to cool her heated blood.
Thank heavens for Delphine, the sister theyâd adopted off the street. Relieved to have a female companion, she chatted constantly. âChristian has never brought a lady home. In fact, none of my brothers have.â
âChristian has not brought Miss Lawton home,â Aaron Chance corrected coldly. He took a long sip of wine. âNecessity calls for her to remain here until weâve dealt with our current problem.â
Delphineâs wide mouth curled into a teasing grin. âWell, itâs certainly no ordinary night. Iâll not be surprised to find Miss Scrumptious enjoying supper with us tomorrow.â
Aaron ground his teeth. âHer name is not Miss Scrumptious. And Iâd rather eat my own eyeballs than entertain that woman.â
Aware of Isabellaâs confusion, Christian said, âDelphine is referring to Miss Lovelace. Her father owns the gaming establishment across the road. Aaron had a doll made in her likeness to which he adds pins daily.â
âPerhaps youâve been conspiring with Miss Lovelace, too,â Aaron challenged. âWhy not invite all our enemies to dine at our table?â
Aramis was keen to explain the reason for his brotherâs temper. âAaron accosted Miss Scrumptious in the street this morning and demanded to know why sheâd spent the night at her fatherâs gaming hell. She stuck her nose in the air and said she refused to discuss business with her competitor.â
âShe made it sound like she owned the damn place,â Aaron growled.
For the first time in an hour, Isabellaâs shoulders relaxed. At least she wasnât the only one to feel the depth of Aaron Chanceâs disdain.
Delphine laughed. âMiss Scrumptious isââ
Aaron thumped the table with his fist, the cutlery jumping to attention along with his kin. âSheâs not bloody scrumptious. Sheâs an annoying bluestocking whoâs used to getting her own way. Now, change the damn subject before I flip this table on its head, and youâre forced to eat off the floor.â
Delphine seemed to find her brotherâs volatile reaction pleasing. She brushed a lock of ebony hair behind her ear. âChristian tells me you knew each other as children, Miss Lawton.â
Before Isabella could answer, Aaron snapped, âWe do not talk about the past, Delphine.â
Delphine slammed her cutlery down on the china plate. âCan I talk about scones? Or did you almost choke on one in a previous life?â
Isabella bit back a chuckle and cleared her throat. âI must thank you, Mr Chance,â she said, keen to bring an order of calm. âIt canât be easy having me here, and I know you do so purely out of concern for your brother.â
The tension in the air dissipated slightly.
