CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

“I thought your little man might be able to use this.” Sam stood in the doorway of Agnes’s house.

Agnes looked at the handcrafted high chair he held in his arms. “You made this?”

He nodded. “I build furniture to pass the time. Nothing fancy, of course. Just useful pieces. I heard you were looking for baby things.”

“It’s perfect. I’ve been feeding him on my lap, and he spits his food everywhere. By the end of a meal, I’m covered in it. I’ve never had so much laundry to do in all my life.”

Sam chuckled as he set down the chair. “I guess that’s all part of the fun of babies. My sisters weren’t so different when they ate.”

“How many siblings do you have?”

“Well, my ma was married and had me and one of my sisters. Our pa died when we were small. She remarried and had eight more.” He ran his hand along the back of the high chair. “How ’bout yourself?”

“It was just me. I didn’t have any brothers or sisters.”

“Sounds like you and I came from different worlds.” He tickled Fred under his chin. “An only child and a city girl.” He whistled low. “I wonder how you ended up in a place like this.”

“I wonder how any of us did.”

“I suppose it could be luck.” He looked away. “Or it was just what was at the end of the road.”

“Is this the end of your road?” she asked.

Sam stood on the doorstep slowly rubbing his hands together. “I guess you could say I’ve been wandering, and this is where I ended up. It’s just a place to work while I decide what’s next.”

“I think we all wander at times.”

“I been thinking about my sisters and family and seems everyone is working toward something. I don’t want to wander forever.”

The temptation to ask more crept in, but she did not honor it.

He lifted the high chair back into his arms. “Can I put this somewhere for you?”

“By the table.” Agnes smiled as she admired her table with the perfect high chair beside it. “I can pay you.”

“No need. I wanted to do it, and the wood was easy enough to come by. The scraps at the camp are fair game.” He patted the back of the chair. “I’m heading into the hills to do a little hunting. I often catch more than I can eat. Would you like a cut?”

Freddie fussed in her arms, squirming uncomfortably. “That’s very kind of you. I’m not sure I should. I probably shouldn’t even accept the chair.”

“Keep it. It was good of you to take Freddie in. I wanted to help.”

She nodded, grateful. “Thank you.”

Sam patted Freddie’s head. “Glad to do it.” He tipped his hat before leaving the house.

Agnes laid Freddie down and unpinned him. “What do you think of Sam?” she said as she changed the baby. “He’s not so coarse as the other loggers. I’d say he’s friendly, wouldn’t you?”

Shaking her head, she looked down at Freddie and watched him gurgle and blow bubbles.
