Chapter 7

Under the Mast roof these days, there were many things disagreed upon, but on this day there was one thing upon which they could all easily agree: a storm was coming, and it was no ordinary storm. As Thomas neared his driveway he could see the sky above him turning unnatural colors. The sun still managed to shine through in places, as if there were cracks in the veil that the Good Lord had thrown up over Hope Crossing. Here and there rays of sunshine could be seen, shining down on the roads and fields, showing the way home. In a word, it was surreal.

There were no raindrops yet, but Thomas was convinced that would come later. The sky would close up soon, shutting out each and every remnant of light. Once that happened, it would be as if midnight had descended upon Home Crossing hours and hours before it should have. It was hard to tell what sort of storm these changes in weather would bring, perhaps it would be a tornado, or perhaps it would simply be a violent rainstorm.

Summer was an interesting time of year. While spring was known for its harshness, summer was known well for the variety it brought. It was an interesting time of year, and in many ways it reminded Thomas of death. The growing season was always full of new life and new hope, but summer was simply the tail end, the calm before the storm, and a prelude to a barren landscape that would accompany fall.

Soon the ground would harden, the leaves of the trees would fall from their branches, and it wouldn't be long before the blue sky took on that dull, gray shade that it did every single year. Thomas always thought to himself, privately that the good times in this world were so fleeting, but, perhaps the turning of the seasons were meant to be a reminder of that.

As he pulled into the barn and unhitched the horse, he prayed that the entire family was here. The horses secured, he closed the sliding door to the barn, latching it into place from the inside, and exiting through the side door.

He crossed his yard and walked through the back door which squeaked, announcing his entry. He made a silent note to himself to oil those hinges and stop that dreadful noise at his next convenience. As he stepped inside, to his delight, dinner was already on the table in spite of the conditions outside.

“Welcome home, Thomas,” Dorothy said with her usual smile. Thomas returned the smile and glanced around the room. Everything was in place, aside from a new pair of skates, which were sitting just outside the door to the hallway. “How was your day?”

“Long,” he answered, nodding, “but good, as the Lord allowed it to be.”

“Praise the Lord,” Dorothy said as she pulled his chair out from beneath the table.

Jacob and Sarah entered the room silently, and Thomas wondered what had happened. The roller skates were
