Chapter 5
Dorothy sat on the porch of her best friend Martha, and to say she was perplexed would have been an understatement. She and Martha sat in utter silence for what seemed like ages before Martha finally spoke.
âDorothy,â She said. âWhatâs troublinâ you? Youâve never been so silent for so long.â
âHavenât I?â Dorothy said with a chuckle. âYouâve known me my entire life, you sure canât say such a thing.â
âI can and I will,â Martha said. âNow out with it, whatâs wrong?â
âYou know about Jacob, of course,â Dorothy said.
âIâve known about Jacob since before he came to live with you,â Martha said as she focused almost solely on the knitting, sat in her lap. She was making a blanket, Dorothy could tell that much. Martha was always knitting something. âYou came to me and you said, âI donât think I can do it.' In fact, you said it over and over again. Were you right?â
âI...â Dorothy said, letting her words trail off into the distance for a moment before she opened her mouth again, reeling the words in and catching them. âI may have been wrong, but it hasnât been without its own troubles, that much I can say with certainty.â
âTroubles? Everything comes with troubles. You should see the pile of dishes in my sink right now. If my husband comes home to that thereâll be troubles aâ plenty.â
âOther troubles,â Dorothy said. âYou know the ones. I had friends before this. I had so much fellowship, and now, because of Jacob, so many of them turn the other way. I havenât told him this, truly I havenât, and I feel that somehow I still do the Lordâs work by showing him kindness, but I do so miss my friends.â
âI am your friend, Dorothy,â Martha said, looking up for a moment. âI am still here. Is that not enough for you?â
âIt IS enough!â Dorothy said, perhaps a bit too loudly. âI do not want you to think I fail to appreciate our bond. Thatâs not the case at all. But youâre not always here, and Thomas is always so busy, and sometimes...sometimes I feel so alone.â
âAre you really alone when you have God?â Martha pointed out. âHe placed this burden on you because you could handle it. He would not have done so otherwise. God is not cruel, he is just, he is fair, and he helps us to fulfil our purpose on this world. Donât you think maybe this is your purpose?â
âI thought so, perhaps, and thatâs why I stuck with it for so long, but somethingâs happened, and I feel a conflict rising within myself.â
âHas it something to do with the accident?â
âYou know about the accident?â Dorothy was a bit surprised.
âEveryone in the Crossing knows about the accident,â Martha said. âHow is he doing anyway?â
âHe...he canât remember us or much of anything else,â Dorothy said. âIt is as if he were a different person entirely. I have to say, my conflict rises from the fact that...well...I like this new Jacob better.
