Darcy

Istood at the edge of the racetrack in Liford, watching the dragons and their riders as they flew past with a thunderous symphony of wings. Their muscular bodies gleamed in the sunlight as they strained to reach the finish line. The excitement in the air was palpable as was the hint of danger that accompanied every interaction with these magnificent beasts, but my thoughts were elsewhere; and I would be a liar if I said that they had been anywhere else lately but upon Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

But I was also at the race for another reason.

"Mr. Carter," I called out, raising my arm to catch the attention of the Meryton Inn's head groom. The gentleman approached me with a curious expression upon his face that cleared when he recognized me, but I still detected a hint of trepidation in his eyes when he came closer to the fence that separated the spectators from the riders and their mounts.

"Ah, Mr. Darcy, what brings you here today?"

"I wish to discuss sponsoring your rider for larger races. I believe he has unparalleled talent and deserves every opportunity to compete at a higher level," I said.

Mr. Carter's eyes narrowed, and his response came out guarded. "I appreciate your interest, sir, but that is a decision I cannot make alone."

As I approached, I strained to hear their words, but their voices were muffled by the cacophony of the crowd. I was about to move closer when a familiar face caught my attention.

A man I recognized from London, one of Caroline Bingley's acquaintances, stood nearby, nervously glancing around as if he wished to avoid detection. His reluctance to make eye contact only served to pique my curiosity.

"Excuse me, sir, have we not met before? In London, perhaps?" I asked, attempting to engage him in conversation.

"Er, yes, Mr. Darcy," he replied hesitantly, offering a curt bow. "We have indeed crossed paths at a few social events."

"Are you acquainted with Miss Caroline Bingley?" My inquiry seemed to startle him, causing him to fidget uncomfortably.

"Y-yes," he stammered. "We are... friends, I suppose. Why do you ask?"

"Curiosity, nothing more." I studied his face, searching for any hint of deceit, but found none. The man's unease was genuine, and it left me with an unsettling feeling that something was amiss. "Enjoy the race, sir," I said, excusing myself from the conversation.

As I turned my attention back to Mr. Carter and Mr. Jackson, I could not shake the nagging sensation that there was more to the presence of Caroline's friend in Liford. What
