Emmett stared out at the dance floor and frowned. Portia was standing near Lady Roslyn and discussing whatever ladies discussed at such events. He avoided balls and soirees like this one as much as possible. The females in attendance always wanted to gain his attention. They wanted to dance and hoped to lure him into a courtship. He didnât want a wife. He definitely didnât want to be any ladyâs suitor. The only reason he was at this ball was to act the chaperone to his little sister. Otherwise, he would have found something else to occupy his time with.
Lyonsdale came to stand beside him. âAre you going to dance or glower at everyone all evening?â
âThe latter,â he said in a contemptuous tone. He wasnât even remotely happy. Though his gaze kept wandering over to the lady next to Portia. He didnât know what it was about Lady Roslyn. She drove him madâboth with desire and frustration. Emmett wanted to drag her away from the ballroom and kiss her until neither of them knew where each other began. Heâd like to do a hell of a lot more than that, but he would gladly start with the feel of her lips against his.
âWell,â Lyonsdale drawled. âYouâre clearly in a mood.â
He glared at his friend. âKeep talking and youâll find out exactly how discontent I am.â
âNo need to be an arse,â Lyonsdale told him. âI am well aware of how much you do not wish to be here.â He nodded toward Portia. âYou should at least dance with your sister. Itâs only polite to do so.â
He sighed. âI donât want to dance at all.â
Lyonsdale shook his head. âAll right,â he said with resignation. âIâll be a good friend and dance with her for you, but you will owe me.â
âRight.â Emmett rolled his eyes. He had to wonder if the earl was using this as an excuse to dance with Portia. He wasnât the fool his friend believed him to be. For whatever reason, Lyonsdale cared about Portia. Emmett just wasnât sure how deep those feelings ran and what the earl wanted with his sister. He would discern all of it later. He had something else in mind for the evening. It was time for him to find some time alone with Lady Roslyn, and perhaps he could steal that kiss he desperately wanted. âYou do that. I am certain Portia will appreciate your kind gesture. Iâll even walk over with you while you ask her. That way she wonât use me as an excuse to refuse your request.â
âGood of you to be of assistance,â Lyonsdale said, then laughed. âYou must really want to have a reason to avoid dancing.â
âOf course,â he replied in an affable tone. What he wanted was a reason to approach Lady Roslyn, that appeared innocent.
They strolled over to Portia. She glanced up and smiled. âHello brother dear.â
âI trust youâre well,â he said.
âIs there any reason I wouldnât be?â She lifted a brow.
âI would hope not.â He frowned. When had Portia gotten so cheeky? This had to be the influence of Lady Roslyn.
