FIFTY-SIX

Jo answered her phone as she was getting in the car. “Ford. I saw it. Did you already talk to Adams?”

“I did,” Ford replied. “Are you mobile?”

“About to be.” Jo stuck her key in the ignition. Gave it a twist. She glanced at her mirrors before reversing in a hurry. “Do I need to come get you?’

“Nope. Already asked Adams to grab me. He should get here right around the same time as the medics I called to take care of Mr. Hadley. Who assured me his insurance would cover everything.”

“Is he doing all right?” Jo asked.

“Much better than before. But I’m not willing to leave him by himself.”

“Good call.”

“Adams wants us to meet up and talk,” said Ford.

“No time,” Jo replied. “Here’s the plan. You and Adams head to Windermere. Get some answers out of the idiots who withheld that footage from us. I’ll find Seth.”

***

Jo drove directly to Seth Dunn’s house. Traffic was light, and she made it there in good time. She pulled up at the foot of his driveway and got out of the car.

One look at the yard made her stomach drop. She didn’t see any sign of the muddy Corsica Seth had been driving the day before. He wasn’t home.

And he wasn’t at work. If he had been, he would have been in his van.

Where could he be?

As far as the van went, she didn’t see it either. Not at first. But she spotted it as she was walking up the driveway. Seth had parked it to the side, between two of his junkers. He had covered it in a giant tarp, blocking off the logos on the sides and back. Only the front was poking out.

Jo lifted the tarp to get a look to verify that it was the van. Seth had left it here. He had parked it in the yard, hiding it behind a few rusty trucks. And beneath a tarp.

The implication was clear. Seth had seen the news broadcast. He knew he was caught. He covered the van up, then left in his Chevy Corsica.

Seth Dunn had fled.

Jo cursed, letting the tarp fall.

It had only been twenty minutes since the news broadcast. Seth couldn’t be too far away yet. But he could have gone in any direction. Finding him wouldn’t be an easy process.

Like digging out a tick.

She approached the house. Her hope was that Seth had left in a hurry. Maybe forgetting to lock the door.

Her hunch turned out to be correct. She walked straight in the front door.

“Mr. Dunn, this is Agent Pullinger,” she called. “Are you here?”

It was worth a try. But there was no answer.

She moved through the house. It was as expected. Plainly furnished. Some areas were overflowing with junk. Most of it looked like pieces of projects that Seth had abandoned over the years.

She looked inside every room. She moved fast. Hunting for the man himself. But all she managed to do was confirm what she already knew.

Seth was gone. For the second time, he had sensed her coming and ran away.
