FORTY-ONE

Ford’s heart skipped a beat when he saw Kelly’s name flash on his caller ID. Sitting up in bed, he cleared his throat and quickly answered. “Hey, Kelly.”

“Hey, Bryan,” his wife said. “It’s not too late, is it?”

Ford peeled off the covers and swung his feet off the bed. “No, not at all. Everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine.” There was a pause. “Hazel’s here. She wanted to talk to you.”

Ford’s heart swelled with emotion. “That’s great.”

“You’re okay to talk? You’re not at work?”

“No, I’m home. You can put her on.”

“Hang on.” Ford made out the sounds of the phone being passed over before he heard his little girl greet him with: “Daddy!”

Tears welled in his eyes. He could practically feel Hazel right in front of him. “Hi, sweetheart! How are you?”

“I’m good,” Hazel said. “I’m tired.”

“Did you have a big day?”

“Yeah, I got an A on my spelling quiz.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” Ford said, wishing he could see the paper that was probably tacked to the fridge with a magnet. “You’re going to be a big-time writer one day.”

Hazel said, “I hope so.”

Ford said, “I know so.”

“How was your day, Daddy?”

Thoughts of murder and intrigue were not things Ford wanted to think about at this moment. “I had a good day, sweetheart,” he said.

“Did you catch a lot of bad guys?”

Ford huffed. “Yeah. Quite a few.”

“I miss you, Daddy.”

The strings tugging on Ford’s heart pulled tight. “I miss you, too.”

“Can I talk to you soon?” she said.

“Of course, you can.”

“Hazel,” Kelly said, “it’s time to go to bed.”

Hazel said, “I have to go.”

“That’s okay, honey. You get some rest.”

“I love you, Daddy.”

Ford swallowed the lump in his throat. “I love you, too, Hazie.”

“Bryan,” Kelly called out.

“Yeah?” he said.

“Sleep well.”

Smiling, Ford replied, “Sleep well.” He placed the phone back on the nightstand. Hope began to well inside him.

His joy was cut short when his phone rang again, and Griffin’s name lit up the screen.

Ford answered. “Lieutenant.”

“Get dressed.”

“What’s going on?”

Griffin sighed. “Richard Kellerman’s body was just discovered by a patrol unit.”
