The Wonderful Counselor

A counselor is someone you go to for advice and help when you are going through hard stuff. If you need to make a really big decision and you have no clue what to do, you can go to a counselor. If your family is having problems, you can all go talk to a counselor. If you feel scared or anxious a lot of the time, a counselor can help you. A counselor is like a life coach, and Jesus is the great life coach—or Wonderful Counselor. He is all for you! He wants you to succeed, and He can help you get there. The Bible has a lot to say about this.

•“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Psalm 32:8).

•“You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory” (Psalm 73:24).

•“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

We can get super confused if we try to solve our own problems or ask people who might not be helpful—like our friends—for advice. It’s not that your friends want to hurt you. It’s just that they don’t have the wisdom or experience to give you the best advice. And you can always count on Jesus to give you the best advice.

Sometimes even the experts can make mistakes! When I was young and suffered from asthma, my father took me to the doctor to get treatment. But one time, the doctor made a mistake. (Don’t worry—this was a long time ago, and you should trust your doctors!) He put the wrong medicine in the syringe. Despite his training and medical wisdom, he gave me the incorrect medicine. Yes, the doctor had gone to school and studied and earned a degree. Yes, the doctor had a license and experience. But the doctor was human. And humans make mistakes.

Jesus, the Wonderful Counselor, never makes a mistake. Ever.

Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor because He knows about absolutely everything. He doesn’t just have perfect knowledge. He also has perfect understanding. Hebrews 2:17-18 tells us that Jesus became like us so He could better help us. He’s felt what you feel. He knows what it’s like to be forgotten, overlooked, ignored, and made fun of. He gets it. He gets you. He understands.

Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor! What questions would you like to ask a counselor about your life? Write them down and then pray and ask for God’s help.
