5.

Now the utility values for all alternatives are known and can be compared with each other. The alternative course of action with the highest utility value obtains the highest ranking and is to be favoured.

Example

An event organiser used to hire a professional photographer to take promotional pictures of his events for publication on the Internet and in social media. In order to reduce the resulting costs, they decide to have the required pictures taken by their employees instead. For this reason, they want to look into the acquisition of a suitable camera. Together with their employees, they prepare a Utility-Value Analysis to figure out the various options. The result of the evaluation is shown in Fig. 4.15.

The result of the Utility-Value Analysis shows that the option of taking photos with one’s own mobile phone clearly comes out on top. The quality is certainly sufficient for use on social media, and if one considers the simple handling and constant availability, this alternative is clearly the best. Also, this is the most cost-effective option, as no new camera has to be purchased.
