Chapter 7

“Why don’t you interview me off camera? Then you can use whatever information you get from the interview for your show.” Mahalia shared a hopeful smile with Nathan and Alexis as she led them into her kitchen.

Alexis was helping Nathan and Mahalia clear their hostess’s dining table after lunch Tuesday afternoon. As she followed Mahalia to her sink, she noted the kitchen smelled of the savory spices Mahalia had used for the chicken she’d served. Alexis drew a deep, appreciative breath. She also observed the silence. Nathan’s plumbing repair from last week was holding.

Alexis made two promises to herself. First, before she returned to Philadelphia, she’d try to get Mahalia to share some of her recipes. Second, she wouldn’t eat another thing for the rest of the day; not one bite. Or at least, if she did, she’d jog it off before bedtime.

Behind her, Nathan sounded amused. “Ms. Mahalia, you’ve tried to get me to buy into that plan before. It didn’t work then, it’s not working today.”

“Is it only because of the cameras, Ms. Mahalia?” Alexis stood beside their hostess. “Is that why you don’t want to be in the doc?”

“That’s part of it.” Mahalia took the dishes from Alexis and Nathan. “I hear those cameras make people look fat.”

Alexis gave a surprised laugh. “You don’t have anything to worry about.” She gestured toward the statuesque older woman, admiring her slim figure in the candy-red slacks and rose silk blouse. Today, she’d accessorized with sterling silver jewelry. “You’re very fit.”

Mahalia’s smile was modest. “I power walk three miles a day, and do yoga and weightlifting several times a week.”

Alexis was impressed. “We’ll also make sure you’re comfortable with the way the camera frames you before we record the interview.”

Mahalia crossed to get her apron from a peg beside her cabinets.

Alexis took it from her. “You cooked that wonderful meal. I’ll take care of the dishes.”

“And I’ll dry them.” Nathan grabbed a dishtowel from the silver metal bar beside the counter.

“Thank you.” Their hostess looked pleased. She settled onto a chair at her small blond wood kitchen table. “Why do you want me to be interviewed on camera?”

“Your memories and anecdotes would add emotion to the doc.” Nathan stood beside Alexis at the sink.

Close enough for her to soak in his warmth. Close enough for her to want to lean against him. Alexis shifted her feet, trying to break the spell that threatened to make her act out of character.

“We’re not going to put you on trial.” Trying to lighten the mood, Alexis tossed the comment and a smile over her shoulder.

Nathan continued. “We have historians and representatives who’ll speak to the historical era of the Sluggers. You’re the only one who can speak to the human aspect and what the team meant to its community.”

“But all I have is hearsay, generations removed.” There was a helpless shrug in Mahalia’s voice. “I can only tell you what my parents told me and what their parents told them.”

“That’s how we’ve
