Chapter Twenty-One

Josiah couldn’t wait for the dinner to be over. His skin crawled with annoyance, his irritation spiking every time Lord Milshire spoke. The lord was quite full of himself, he realized, and was bathing in all the attention being given to him. Josiah wasn’t very keen on adding to that.

He told himself that it was Lord Milshire’s bothersome personality that drove him up the wall. He told himself that he had declined to stay for a drink in the drawing room because he couldn’t stand to be in the lord’s presence a second longer. He ignored the voice in his head that reminded him he couldn’t stomach the thought of having Miss Pridham around Lord Milshire for a moment longer than need be.

“I am quite tired,” he told Violet. “And so, I think it is best for me to return home.”

She looked as if she was about to protest, but Lord Milshire spoke next. “It is a marvelous idea, My Lady. I truly enjoyed my time here tonight, but I too must return home before it gets too late.”

Violet’s shoulders sagged. Lucy looked very disappointed. Miss Pridham was silent.

She’d been quiet ever since Lord Milshire had plainly revealed that they had once courted. Josiah had been too, fearing that if he spoke, he might say something he shouldn’t.

“Very well, then.” Violet rose. She called for the butler and the bent, old man pushed through the doors a few seconds later. “It was a pleasure having you all for dinner tonight. I hope we can do this again.”

“It would be my pleasure, My Lady.” Lord Milshire bowed with a flourish, wearing his ever-present grin. “Now, if you would all excuse me, I bid you a good night.”

Josiah watched him go, trailing behind the butler. Anger bubbled inside him and the longer he stared after the damnable man, the more that rage grew.

“Lucy.” Violet’s voice broke through the haze that had fallen over him. Josiah turned his attention back to his sister-in-law, taking care not to look at Miss Pridham. He didn’t want to risk seeing her stare after Lord Milshire as well. “Are you prepared?”

“Yes, I am,” Lucy said. Her voice was wistful and she was staring at the chair Lord Milshire had been sitting in.

“Prepared for what?” Josiah asked, hoping for a distraction.

“Lucy will be returning to your home tonight,” Violet said. “I believe she now understands the errors of her actions. I hope you do not have any objections.”

“None whatsoever,” Josiah said. He prayed Violet was telling the truth. He didn’t want Miss Pridham having to deal with Lucy’s rudeness again.

Unbidden, the memory of the small altercation between Miss Pridham and Lord Milshire popped into his head. Josiah didn’t want to think about it, but there was no stopping it. It had bothered him to see how bothered Miss Pridham was at the thought of Lord Milshire being remarried. It seemed to trouble Lucy as well, who couldn’t have made her interest in him any clearer. And it
