Chapter 6
A commotion outside woke Conner from a deep sleep and he sat up. At his side Ciaran growled angrily.
âThieves.â The word was little more than a snarl from Ciaran.
âTheyâll be stealing the cows.â Conner grabbed his britches quickly and began to pull them on. He expected Ciaran to do the same but as he looked across at his lover, it was the black wolf that returned his gaze. âWait for me.â Conner shouted out as Ciaran trotted to the stairs.
Pausing long enough to grab his stick, Conner ran out with Ciaran at his heels. He was right about the thieves. They were indeed trying to steal his cattle, those that were his wedding gift from Ciaranâs father.
But it seemed the cattle, so docile with him and Ciaran, had no intention of being stolen. They were making the ruckus and resisting being led away. The rest of Connerâs herd were at the far end of the paddock, protected by the bull. Conner could see their shapes in the grey of the early morning mist.
Anger boiled in his veins and Conner shook his stick and roared angrily at the shadowy, cloaked figures. He watched Ciaran snap and snarl at the menâs heels as they ran away empty handed.
As Ciaran trotted back to him, Conner went to his cattle, patting their necks. The great bull came over to accept some of the pats Conner bestowed. By the time Ciaran joined him, his lover had reverted into human form.
âIf the cattle hadnât made such a noise, we could have lost them.â Conner pulled Ciaran against him so his loverâs back was against Connerâs chest. The position allowed them both to pet the animals, but also helped appease Connerâs protective instincts. He knew there was no one to see Ciaran, but his beloved was naked, and this way his body covered Ciaranâs.
âThey are yours. My father gifted them to you. They accept me because we are mated. But they will not accept another manâs hand.â Ciaran twisted a little in Connerâs embrace and kissed his jaw.
âLetâs go back inside. I have no desire to risk you being seen unclothed by another.â Conner urged Ciaran in the direction of the house, keeping his own body as close as possible to his loverâs.
âNo matter if they did. My body is yours and yours alone. But I feel vulnerable out here like this. I wouldnât normally be outside and naked in human form unless there was a good reason to make the change suddenly.â
âWhile you dress, Iâll get breakfast. Perhaps you should come with me to market today?â Conner was loathe to leave Ciaran alone, even knowing his beloved could become a wolf.
Ciaran shook his head. âI donât wish to be in a place with so many humans. I feel uncomfortable. Iâll be fine here, my love. Iâll work on the butter and I will prepare todayâs meal for us. Iâve learned a lot from watching you.â Ciaran looked over his shoulder at Conner as they entered the house.
