Chapter 11

When I arrived to the house downtown, Lo was standing outside with Marla Monroe and as I parked on the curb, Lo leaned in for a hug before walking towards the car. “How’d it go?” I said as soon as she opened the door.

She laughed and said, “You sound as excited as I was.” I shrugged and started driving towards my mom’s house. “It was everything I expected and more.” She placed her bag on the floor and dug out her notepad, same she used during my interview. “One thing she said I thought you’d appreciate—

In a space where you stand out, shine brighter.” I felt that, all of that, and it brought a smile to my face. “I knew she had many accomplishments in the technology field, but there were so many unmentioned things she’s done, not only for her, but for women who come after her.”

“Sounds like she’s a trailblazer.”

“Exactly.”

“Okay, we’re getting close to Juanita’s house.” Like all my other friends when I called my mama by her first name, Lo looked at me in sheer shock. “My nerves are rattled,” I finally admitted, knowing her big interview was out of the way and she now had space for my problem.

She placed her hand on top of mine and said, “Just breathe. Softly.” I did just that. “And remember no matter what happens, she’s your mama and you can’t change the way she thinks.” I frowned at that because I didn’t want my mama to be the small town, small minded individual I feared she could be.

With the car parked in the driveway, I took one last deep breath and said, “Alright babe, come meet my mama.” Through all the deep breaths my heart was still thumping against my chest, threatening to make its way out of my throat.

Juanita opened the door and her arms stretched wide when she saw me. “Hey baby,” she said as she ushered us into the house. “Hello dear,” she said to Lo casually. She looked between the two of us then asked, “I thought you were bringing your boyfriend home for me to meet.” She looked behind us and out the window.

“Juanita,” I said calmly. Of course she looked at me with her hand to her hip. “This is Lo”—I looked to Lo, who embodied the peace and tranquility I was searching for—“my girlfriend.”

“Girl,” my mama said, “let’s go into this kitchen and eat this meal I spent hours prepping.” She walked ahead of us but said over her shoulder, “You always playing. Your girlfriend?” she mocked.

I looked to Lo and mouthed, “Sorry.” She shook her head gently.

My mama told us to take a seat at the table while she prepared our plates. I looked around the kitchen and asked, “Where’s your husband?” She explained he was on a fishing trip and he might make it back in time before I left. “You know we are going out tonight, so we’ll only be here for a little while.”

“I know. My time with you is always limited.
