Chapter Nine

Evie

The next day I slept more heavily than I ever had, knowing Drake was right next to me. He awoke from stone, and immediately rolled over to kiss me.

Normally, I needed time to wake up before I could respond, but with Drake it felt so right that I wrapped myself around him.

And that was why we were almost twenty minutes late in opening the bakery. But I couldn't be sorry, not with two orgasms and a happy Drake to start off my evening.

I unlocked the front door, and the bell above it chimed its familiar and comforting sound. My hands were already itching to get baking. I was so happy that I just knew tonight’s bakery treats would be extra special.

"Ready to make some magic happen?" Drake's deep, soothing voice rumbled beside me as we stepped over the threshold.

"With you? Always," I replied, brushing my hand over his arm. I turned and swiped the lights on and the warm, cozy feeling was shattered by an unexpected sound coming from the kitchen—a harsh, gushing noise that overpowered the quiet hum of the ovens.

I dropped my startled gaze to the floor and saw water creeping across the checkered tiles. The water swirled around our feet, cold and foreboding.

My stomach dropped to my feet. Water. There was water… all over the floor.

"Look," I said, pointing at the encroaching lake.

"Water," he stated simply, unfazed, though the tension in his broad shoulders told me he was already calculating our next move.

His taloned feet splashed lightly as he moved forward, his long jet-black braid swinging behind him.

Together, we waded through the burgeoning flood. A damp smell mingled with the sweet fragrance of baked goods: a bizarre combination that unsettled me.

The bakery was my haven, my escape. I felt sick at the thought of being without it. And then a twinge of fear struck me.

“Gran’s cookbook!” I pushed my way behind the serving counter to look for it. I remembered I’d put it on the shelves behind the counter when we’d finished work early this morning.

My stomach clenched at the thought of it being waterlogged, of the recipes washing away.

“It’s alright Evie; it’s right here.” Drake picked it up off the top of the shelf.

I let out a gust of breath. “Oh, thank Circe. It’s my last piece of my gran.”

Drake cupped my cheek. “It’s safe here. Let’s check and see where the water is coming from.”

“Yeah, sure.” Whatever this mess was and whatever had caused it, we'd clean it up.

"Let's go find the source," I suggested, stepping gingerly over a particularly large patch of water.

"Lead the way," he replied, and together we ventured further into the heart of the bakery.

I pushed open the door to the kitchen, and the rushing sound of water greeted me. My heart sank.

"The pipes have burst,” I whispered, barely able to hear myself above the chaotic sounds. "The water will ruin everything.”

“Where’s the main valve?”

I just blinked at Drake for a moment. Then I shook myself into action, and sloshed my way to the water inlet, near the back door.
