Like Hot Cakes

The next morning, as she pulled up behind Just Like Grandma’s, Sammy hummed happily to herself. Talking with Cliff had been like drinking a health tonic, especially when paired with a long prayer as she lay in bed that night. She knew she had a lot of work ahead of her, but she’d reminded herself numerous times that it didn’t have to happen all at once. Nobody expected her to be baking a wedding cake, helping Greg get out of legal trouble, and worrying about Helen all at once. She just needed to focus on one task at a time, and she already knew the first thing she would tackle once she came in the door. Sammy had plans for baking the morning away to make sure Just Like Grandma’s was fully stocked with cinnamon rolls, fresh cakes and pies, and dinner rolls. Those were the most popular items that always sold like hot cakes.

But her dreams of a focused and productive morning were dashed as soon as she walked in the door. Kate was standing in the kitchen, hastily serving up an entire tray full of biscuit and gravy orders. The restaurant had only just opened, and already she looked frazzled.

“I didn’t think you were working this morning,” Sammy said as she set her purse in the office and washed her hands.

“Nice to see you, too,” the waitress retorted as she accidentally slopped a ladle of gravy onto the side of the tray. She grumbled about it as she grabbed a rag.

“I didn’t mean it like that. I just thought Helen was working. I must’ve gotten my days mixed up. I’ve been a bit distracted lately.” That was definitely true, but she knew everything was going to get better. It had to.

“No, you’re not mixed up at all,” Kate replied. She let the ladle plop back into the pot of gravy and picked up her tray. “Helen was supposed to work this morning, but she didn’t show up. Nobody has been able to get a hold of her, and Johnny called me to see if I could come in.”

Sammy raised an eyebrow as she glanced at the cook, who was hurriedly whipping up breakfast sandwiches and pancakes left and right. Johnny hardly said a thing even in person, and she couldn’t imagine what it must’ve been like to talk to him on the phone. “I see. Well, I’m here now and ready to help.”

“Thank goodness, because the breakfast crowd is particularly hungry and demanding today.” Kate breezed out through the swinging door.

Sammy glanced longingly at the pantry, where she knew the yeast and other ingredients were ready for the first batch of cinnamon rolls. She needed to bake, because the things she made were what people would be ordering, but she couldn’t exactly leave Kate to handle it all by herself on a busy morning. She tied on her apron, grabbed her order pad, and headed out to the dining room.

“Sammy!” Rosina Fitzgerald waggled her fingers in the air from across the room, several rings shining in the lights.
