CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Halloween in the vet practice had been a three-ring circus full of patients and their humans in costumes. When Jason arrived that morning, Lurlene sprayed his bushy blond hair into a full lionâs mane and used a makeup pencil to give him the appearance of whiskers. She wore a pink gown resembling Glinda the Good Witch and handed out treats to all the patients. Dr. Burgess fit the Oz theme by wearing something that could be a vaguely steampunk wizard.
At the end of the day, Jason waited near the door with Rebel, a sweet Rottweiler who belonged to Justin, a gym rat with impressive shoulders and a tight ass whoâd skipped a few leg days. Jason had hooked up with him over the weekend after the debacle with Miranda because heâd been in the headspace for an aggressive fuck. Several of them. The reversal of power seemed to appeal to Justin, who wanted a repeat performance. The feeling was not mutual.
âHey,â Justin said huskily as he came up to Jason and fondled his fingers while he took Rebelâs leash. âYou want to...â
âHave a good night,â Jason said loudly, stepping back from them.
Justin gave him a resigned expression. âYou know how to find me again if you want me.â
He and Rebel walked out into the night, and Lurlene came around from behind the desk to lock the front door and windows. Jason tried to figure out what heâd do again until the next morning. He didnât get too far in his plans before Lurlene turned her pink and motherly attention on him.
âWhatâs going on with you, dear?â
He avoided direct eye contact. âNothing. Just a long day.â
âAs a mother of boys, I know when something is nothing and when something is wrong.â
Jason rubbed his tired, gritty eyes but didnât give her the information she was fishing for.
âItâs Halloween. Are you going to do anything with your friends?â Lurlene asked as she walked back behind her desk.
âI donât have any friends.â
That wasnât entirely true. The people in the Sign Language group were nice enough. Maybe he could have done something with them. Heâd gone to the meeting the previous night. And no surprise. Miranda wasnât there, though Michael had asked after her. Maybe she decided to give up on Sign Language when she gave up on him.
âOh, sugar,â Lurlene said with a skeptical laugh. âWhat about Miranda?â
âNo, I donât have her, either,â Jason said with an annoyed sigh.
âThat canât be right. Did yâall have a fight?â Her expression went from softly teasing to concerned. âPeople get over fights. My husband and I had to work through several misunderstandings before we got together. It happens when two people care about each other.â
âShe doesnât want to see me anymore,â he spat before turning away from her knowing eyes. âShe was my only friend, but now thatâs over.â
Jason rubbed the bridge of his nose to hide his face and the emotions he was desperately trying to hold in check. This was worse than the Sign Language group.
