Chapter 9

Glass splintered then burst inwards as shots poured into the restaurant from the shattered windows. At first, the heavy blinds swayed like it was nothing more than a summer breeze that blew between the slats, then I watched as the white shades tore apart and crashed to the ground. The mafiosos that had been sitting closest to the windows jerked and twisted in the gunfire until they slumped to the ground amidst pools of red that definitely matched the carpet.

A few of the Cubans had managed to duck before the onslaught of bullets from what had to be fully automatic weapons started to shred the place, and had crawled over to what was left of the windows to let loose some retaliation of their own. The pop from their own weapons was loud inside the confines of the restaurant, but seemed like little more than buzzing gnats when compared to the barrage from the street.

One particularly large goon raised his head for a better look but was just a little too slow at getting back behind cover. His beefy head imploded for a moment, and then a spray of red splattered across the floor and wall. His body careened backwards, twitched a few times, and then went still.

Like everyone else, I’d dropped at the first sound of gunfire, but I still wasn’t prepared for what I witnessed. I was fixated on the man who no longer had a face, while my mind tried to make sense of what used to be his nose. There was a moment when the only sound I could hear was the thump of my own blood in my ears. It was as if I was stuck inside of a mob movie, rather than my own life, or maybe a virtual reality game that I couldn’t escape.

When I finally looked away from the faceless man, I remembered the men out front at their tables, but the old men with bright eyes were probably Swiss cheese now, given the new holes in the front walls of the restaurant. It wasn’t hard to imagine what they would look like, since there were plenty of examples inside the restaurant with me. It made my stomach churn while my mouth filled with saliva, and the threat of losing the wonderful dinner that I had just finished was all too real.

There was a lull in the gunfire, and for one long second I thought maybe the Haitians, or whoever it was, had finished their work and left. But another round of bullets crashed through the empty window frames, and when one of the front doors pushed in toward us I was sure they had decided to bring the party inside. To my eternal relief, a few of the older Cuban mobsters fell through the doors as they returned fire.

As if I had been released from a spell, my feet and body unfroze, and I ran toward the men in a low crouch with some vague idea that I needed to get the wounded further inside.
