Aiden was too tired to open his eyes. He tried to persuade his mouth to work but he couldnât make a sound. Each inhalation and exhalation drew ice shards into his lungs. He was descending deeper and deeper into darkness, getting colder and colder. Was this what it was like to die? Sliding into the black? He didnât want to die. Then go up not down, dickhead. But going down was much easier so he let himself sink.
He was dimly aware of someone pulling at him, tugging, dragging, turning him the right way around, urging him up. He slowly rose through the water. But am I going up? He had to look for bubbles. Another one of his disaster tips. Except he couldnât open his eyes. He was dimly aware he wasnât in icy water anymore. Am I breathing? I need to breathe. Fucking breathe!
Aiden woke with a gasp to find himself on the floor of the lounge. He lay under a blanket in front of a blazing fire. Thatâs good. Except he didnât remember lighting the fire. And he was naked under the blanket. Not so good. He didnât remember anything after collapsing in the snow near the house. He closed his eyes again while he thought.
Either heâd summoned up a burst of energy from somewhere, which had been followed by a memory lapse that covered lighting the fire and undressing, or someone had helped him. He was thinking the latter. The owner of the house? Kaegan? Pascal? He rolled over, opened his eyes and found himself nose to nose with⦠Oh fuck, what the hell is that? A pale green stone figure lay next to him. It looked a little like the gargoyle from outside but this one was lying curled up on its side with its eyes closed, tail looped over its hip. Skin or stone? It looked more like skin, the face more human than gargoyle though there were sharp-looking claws on the end of every finger and toe.
Aiden slowly reached out from under the blanket and touched the gargoyleâs arm. It felt like hard like stone, though warmer than heâd expected. Probably due to the fire. Oh shit. What the hell is happening?
âDid you rescue me?â he whispered. âCan I wake you with a kiss?â
Worth a shot? Everything was so strange, it probably was worth a try but when he brushed his lips against the gargoyleâs, nothing happened.
âBlink, if you can hear me,â he said.
He really had no expectation of that happening so when it did, he thought he must have imagined it.
âBlink again,â he whispered.
The gargoyle blinked.
âFuck me, fuck me, fuck me,â Aiden gasped. Then his gaze fell to a long stone cock. âErâ¦maybe not. Oh God. Was it you who rescued me? Blink once for yes, twice for no.â
One blink.
This could not be happening. Aiden swallowed hard. As he squirmed away, his foot slipped from under the blanket and a claw on the gargoyleâs toe caught his ankle. âOuch.â His blood had smeared the stone.
