Every day that has passed since we got back to Thorne Haven, Iâve gotten more and more anxious. Itâs almost been a week, and I havenât heard from Jarred. Thankfully, Zaria has been here to distract me, but I can tell sheâs getting more depressed not knowing where her mother is.
My father has kept me busy with work, so I havenât seen Zaria all day. The only thing I want right now is to get lost in her, to forget about everything. But when I walk into the room, Iâm stopped dead in my tracks as what I find.
âWhat are you doing?â My voice is rough, anger surges through me like a violent storm raging against anything thatâs standing in its way. My nerves are shot. I donât know how Iâm going to get through the next few days, let alone the rest of my life. Everything I thought about Jarred was a lie. He knew exactly what he was doing when he came to Thorne Haven. Leaving him in Tynewood was the least of my worries, though, because now, Zaria is sitting in the dark and I can tell sheâs been crying.
âNothing,â she mumbles, but as she pushes to her feet, she stumbles. My hand shoots out quickly to catch her, and her body molds against mine. This isnât the first time weâve been close, her curves against my solid frame, but the way her head tilts back and her dilated pupils find mine, I realize sheâs drunk.
âTell me what the fuck is going on?â I bite out, frustration and anger, once again, taking hold of me. Emotions arenât new to me; I tend to have them consume me at times. When I found out about Jarredâs lie, I saw red, my blood burned with the deceit of what the unfaithful bastard did.
Zaria doesnât respond, she shoves her phone at my chest. The device hitting me right at my heart, and I grab it with my free hand while I lead her to her bed. With a flop, she falls to the mattress, and then curls up as if sheâs been punched in the gut. I use her hand to unlock the damn thing and see the article thatâs been splashed across her screen.
âHeâs been around all my life,â she tells me in a whisper. âHe was at my sixteenth birthday party.â The man photographed with her mother looks familiar, but I canât quite put my finger on why. The headline states that her mother has moved on from her fatherâs untimely death. The happy couple are walking out of the courthouse, and itâs clear that the large diamond on her motherâs left hand is a wedding ring.
Iâm pulling my phone out and tapping dial on a number to our PI. We have a few who work for us, and I know that Harris will be able to find out who this bastard is. Thereâs something so familiar about him, but I canât quite put my finger on it. The dark hair and tanned features arenât all that I recognize though, itâs his eyes.
