Marcy was finishing with Michele Marie when I got home. Bedtime was a few minutes away, so I had time to spoil her and make her laugh. Fortunately, she was now on a regular schedule. Sleep by seven, up by six.

While Marcy put her to bed, I barbecued on our prohibited gas grill on the balcony. No gas or charcoal grills allowed. It was obviously a good rule for safety reasons. I was enjoying an ice-cold Brooklyn Lager and had two New York strips steaks that had been marinating all afternoon in Cuban-mojo sauce. Marcy’s had gone on first to make sure her well-done temperature preference would be perfect. Mine was to be medium-rare, and if I could get a fire going, I would love having it Pittsburgh-style, charred on the outside.

During dinner, I gave Marcy an update of the case and the last murder, then I asked, “You think it’s worthwhile following up on these two brothers?

“I don’t know how much time you want to spend on them. Honestly, I don’t think they’re the type to seek revenge in this manner.”

“But they promised to get even.”

“Yeah, well. The moment you hear the jury say ‘guilty,’ your first reaction could easily be to strike back. But both these guys are broke, divorced, and down and out. Planning, financing, and carrying out these murders is hardly their MO. Doubt they have the means.”

“So driving to Trenton to talk with the mortgage brother is a waste of time?” I asked, as I sliced a perfect medium piece of New York strip.

“That’s a whole-day event. If you have other suspects, I don’t think it’s worth it,” Marcy replied, adding sour cream to her baked potato.

“Okay, I’ll hold off on the Goodlings. What’s new with you?”

“Before I answer that, let me ask you, these nightmares you had in the last case, the sweats at nights, the inability to sleep. Are they back?”

I had come clean and told her about those last night. Until then, I had shared the nightmares with Dom. I didn’t want her to worry, and here she worried. In my last case, I had suffered from nightmares in which I found myself in a labyrinth, unable to get out. I would advance a bit every night, but at the end, I would find myself right back at the start. It had been excruciating. It trapped me in the dream, and I would get up covered in sweat and debilitated.

“No, they’re not. But I’ve been thinking about it, and I get anxious when I do. So I try not to think about it. Period.”

“Good. Concentrate on the progress you’re making. I’m sure you’ll overcome it.”

That was easier said than done. We were nowhere in this case, and innocent people were dying. Worst of all, the perp pr perps connected my name to these murders.

I sipped some water and again said, “Back to my question. What’s new with you?”

Marcy put her fork and knife down, smiled, and looked at me. I took it to be a serious moment, so I did the same and wiped my mouth.
