By the time Mark responded to his radio call he had snatched his hat and was soaking wet. He quietly said,

“Deputy Donato to base. Over?”

Beth was back in touch in second. “Mark what’s going on? Did you apprehend the suspect? Over.”

Mark said, “Mission aborted, will be back at HQ in a few minutes. Find me a towel. I am drenched. Over and out!”

Patrolman Jaksic was sitting across from Beth who was at the dispatcher’s desk, he was thumbing through the Light and Healthy cooking magazine. He looked over at Beth and said, “Wow this is one heck of a storm. I can’t remember it coming down or blowing this hard since sometime last fall when we had that ‘storm from nowhere’ as the news casters labeled it.”

“I know.” Beth replied. “So glad I did not keep any of my windows at my apartment even slightly cracked as I usually do.”

Jimmy looked up and said, “You ever read this magazine?” and showed her the cover.

“No, why? I think I might have scanned through it in the checkout like at the grocery store.”

“Well it’s like, full of flavorless sounding recipes. Nothing but vegetable stock hardly any salt. No butter in half of them and don’t even breach the subject of adding or cooking bacon in a dish. This stuff is B-O-R-I-N-G, boring!”

“I know.” Beth said. “I cook with butter, salt, pepper, cream, eggs, cheese, all the good stuff!”

Right then the door to the station opened and there stood one dripping from head to toe, Deputy Donato.

“Oh my gosh Mark.” Beth blurted out taking off her headset and rushing over to help him remove his hat and jacket. “Why didn’t you wait until this storm let up?”

“It’s a long story but I am hoping this bird did not fly the coop. Most likely she might wait until the later boat if she going to take off.”

Patrolman Jaksic just sat back down and continued reading through his magazine. He looked up for a brief moment and said, “I hope we don’t get a call. I am not looking to go trudging around this island to go save some poor soul because their car stalled out while they tried to drive through a huge puddle of water. Let them call Norman Moore to tow them to his station.”

Mark looked around and asked Beth, “Is the Chief here?”

No, he’s way out in Tom Nevers with a fire inspection on the old Meyercord Estate. They fixed up a large barn on the property. It now has parking for four cars underneath and two large apartments above it. He said he might just call it a day if nothing is going on here at the station and with this weather I don’t see much happening. If anything, it will be calls for the DPW because of trees and power lines possibly downed.”

“Well that’s a relief. I don’t feel like him starting to ask me all sorts of questions of why I am soaked to the bone.”

Mark made a shh… signal to Beth and told her, “Put the phone on loud ring and come into my office.
