CHAPTER 36

CAYO HOMBRE MUERTO

It was late afternoon as Whelan left the stilt house he was sharing with the other six Dogs. He strolled the less than two blocks to Brooke’s house, knowing how the evening was going to go. She had made that clear without saying a word, as only women can do. He wondered if it was part of the fabled “feminine mystique.”

The weather was perfect with a cloudless sky and a warm breeze out of the southeast. Still, something didn’t feel right. While he’d had innumerable opportunities as a married man, from shy flirtations to bold propositions, he’d always brushed off the interests of other women. Since he and Caitlin had met, she had been his only sex partner. And, until recently he’d been hers. He winced at the thought of what had happened to them since the near-deadly meeting with Maksym. Whelan kicked angrily at a small coconut lying on the shoulder of the road. He focused on the weather again. It looked like there would be perfect conditions for the practice run later that evening.

Brooke’s vacation home, like most of the other houses in the area, was built on pilings so that residential sections were above flood stage with parking underneath. He climbed the stairs and rang the doorbell. She answered it in seconds, throwing it open with a breathless squeal of delight and gracing him with a beautiful, seductive smile, hands on hips. Though it was almost twenty years later, she looked even better than she had as captain of the freshmen cheerleading squad. With her short, pleated skirt and narrow crop top, she still looked the part of a cheerleader. Her long blonde hair was divided into two braids, the same way she had worn it at The U. She had on just the right amount of makeup. Whelan couldn’t take his eyes off of her.

“You haven’t changed much, Brooke, maybe gotten more beautiful.”

She grabbed his arm and all but yanked him inside. “I have nosy neighbors.”

“Is that a problem?”

“What do you mean?”

“Are they likely to tell your husband?”

“Screw him!”

“Things not going well at home?” He raised an eyebrow.

“I told you earlier he’s a bastard.”

“Why’d you marry him?”

She shrugged. “You had dumped me and I was feeling sorry for myself. He was cute, came from money, and seemed like a good catch at the time.”

“Speaking of ‘catch,’ is he likely to wander in while I’m here?”

Brooke grinned coyly. “Why? Isn’t it okay for a wife to have an innocent dinner with an old college friend?”

“Dressed the way you are and looking as good as you do, I doubt we’ll spend much time with dinner. I just don’t want to get shot by an angry husband.”

“I told you, he flies commercial. He’s in Europe for the next two days. Besides, he never comes down here. He’s too busy screwing every female in Florida and Europe and every place in between.”

She slid her hand down the front of his water shorts. “Umm, someone’s ready to play.” She took him by the hand and led him into the master bedroom.
