The soldiers wondered if their ears would ever stop ringing. Bracknor was known to be a patient leader, but many had heard of his explosive rage that only appeared when something dreadful had happened. This was one of those times. The few who had experienced this in the past knew the worst was yet to come. After the shouting had died down, he would speak in more hushed tones, which one must strain to hear. These were the words that held importance.
Fresnie could see him composing himself and waited for what would come next for the soldiers.
Before beginning, Bracknor turned to Princess Soria and bowed. âPrincess Soria, I am patently sorry that you needed to witness my outburst. I realize I have been holding much inside me, and these men, returning without the foul man who meant you harmâ¦â He shot the soldiers daggers with his eyes. âThese men returning without that man appears to have been one blow too many for me. Again, I apologize.â He bowed to Soria.
âYou neednât apologize, kind Bracknor, you have rescued me. You have rescued my family. I am grateful. It would take much more than an outburst of temper to sully you in my eyes.â She returned his bow.
âThank you, mâlady. Fresnie, perhaps you would take the princess a little further away whilst I continue my conversation with these men.
Fresnie nodded their head and motioned for Soria to follow. They would walk a short distance only, so as not to encounter danger. Even so, Soria noticed Fresnieâs hand was placed upon the dagger tucked into their waistband, their fingers twitching lightly.
Bracknor walked up and down the row of soldiers, looking each one of them in the eye. As difficult as it was to hold his gaze, they knew better than to look away. As he stood in front of the two soldiers who had been injured on the ship, he placed a hand upon oneâs shoulder. âYou two may step out of this line. I know you had no choice in the decisions made once you had been injured. Go stand with the other men while I finish addressing this lot.â
The two soldiers did not hesitate to do as he suggested.
Once they were clear away, Bracknor returned his gaze to those remaining. âI will only say this once, so listen carefully, men. This man, this Restunian royal, must be captured and brought before our queen and king. He is not a decent man, and the deal he struck with Banton is a despicable one. I had planned on you returning to the castle with us, escorting Princess Soria to safety, and preparing for trouble with Traintor supporters, which we know is coming. I have now revised my plans. You will change into peasant clothing and scour every inch of the land between here and the port. Once you reach the port, you need to decide if he is already being held captive with the other prisoners. If not, I expect you to bring him to the castle when you find him.
