Veronica returned to the hotel. The snow had let up for the moment, giving her hope for a reprieve from the unseasonable early wintry weather. A few people broke off conversations when they saw her enter the staff room for dinner, making her decidedly uncomfortable at the attention.

There was what her mother would call an atmosphere in the room while she ate. People avoided eye contact and gave a minimal response to anything she said. Several ate quickly and left early. Edna seemed disposed to be civil, but the presence of her boisterous son distracted her, and they left soon after. Veronica finished her meal, although she found her appetite decreasing by the minute.

She went upstairs, feeling relieved at ending any need for social contact for the day. As she entered her sitting room, some instinct made her pause. What’s wrong here?

Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and looked around. A trace of perfume or aftershave coloured the air as if someone had passed through her door within the last few minutes. She walked into the middle of the room and sniffed the air. Something about the scent seems familiar. When she reached the sideboard, she saw her letters had been moved. The difference from the way she’d last seen them in the morning was a matter of a quarter-inch or so. Combined with the scent, to Veronica’s mind, it screamed intrusion!

A careful look through all her papers and small valuables didn’t show anything missing. But again there came the sense of things being a little out of place. Veronica locked her door, drew the bolt across for good measure, then made a pot of tea. Her hand trembled as she picked up the sugar bowl and she set it down again quickly. She couldn’t decide if she should report the matter to Fielding.

Someone entered my room while I was out. Hotel staff or guest, I have no idea, but I know one thing for certain. The intrusion had something to do with Sylvester Brooke’s death.
