CHAPTER 5

He was a fool to go in. The thought of both of Sheena and Estelle in the same place made him nervous and angry. He inhaled, settling himself, and determined to not explode. Grasping the door handle, he pulled it wide and entered the diner.

His gaze fell on the trio at the corner booth. Relief washed over him. Nadine was with Estelle. At least, she wasn’t alone.

The eyes of the locals followed his movements across the room. He halted a few feet from their table.

“There you are,” Sheena said, her voice smooth. “We were just discussing you, and your new employer, Ms. Moore, introduced herself.”

Employer? Neil switched his gaze to Estelle, not taking issue with the term. He had to stay controlled. He tipped his hat at her and Nadine, ignoring Sheena. “Ladies.”

Sheena bristled. Lips pressed tight, she gave a rough snort.

“How’s Beckum?” Nadine asked her. “Hope all those calendar profits are going to good use.”

He’d always liked Nadine and had to restrain a laugh.

Sheena tossed her head. “I’m headed to visit the dear soul. I thought I’d take her some lunch and shouldn’t waste any more time. Some of us don’t have time to play around.” Standing taller, she aimed her gaze at him. “Maybe if they worked harder, their home wouldn’t be at risk.”

Worked harder?

“Listen, here, you,” Neil snapped. “You wouldn’t know the meaning of hard work if it bit you on that fat butt of yours.”

A giggle from a child at a nearby table capped off his remark.

“I’m glad you remembered,” Sheena returned. “You certainly were on it enough. Mine and everyone else’s.”

His stomach lurched, his appetite taking flight.

Estelle coughed, and Neil’s guilt amplified. He knew better than to antagonize Sheena. What she’d said was true. He’d been with her and dozens of others.

“I reckon I ought to take my lunch to go,” he said, quietly. “Like you said, there’s work to do.” Neil revolved, but instead of heading for the counter, he stomped out the door, not looking back.

The embarrassment was all his now. At some point, he’d have to look Estelle in the eye, knowing she’d heard the truth.
