Chapter Ten

Sutter had spent the afternoon in the music portable, perched on a music stool that had one loose leg that was shorter than the others, trying not to fidget and unbalance herself. With all the ballet she’d studied growing up, she should be more graceful, but her leap into Dawson’s truck this morning had left more than one bruise, and now she had visions of her spilling onto the linoleum floor of the portable in an ungraceful and perhaps panty-baring sprawl if she tipped even a little.

Why again, had she grabbed this skirt from the tour bus? And why had she worn it onstage in the first place? Such a tight shirt skirt practically begged a wardrobe malfunction. Her guitar was out of the case and on her lap as she was going to sing a few songs with Carol’s Bella Voce Choir after they ran through their repertoire for her.

The harmonies were so pretty, she could feel tears prick her eyes, but in all honesty, she’d been fighting tears since her silent drive back to Sweet Tea with Dawson. Somehow she’d upset him. Again. Had she done that often during their relationship? She always remembered everything as such smooth sailing. Their love had been perfect. Birds singing. Flowers. Holding hands. Running through sudden cloudbursts and kissing under trees.

Had she been insufferably young and naïve and blind and, admit it, likely selfish?

Her questions had been the impetus for the impulsive dash after him and then the ungainly leap into his truck. Goodness, it was like she was seventeen all over again. And now she had a lump on her head from when she’d hit Dawson somewhere—his thigh or abdomen, maybe his belt buckle. Whatever it was, it had been hard as a rock. And had her questions been answered?

No. Not really. She’d been driven by the desire to spend more time with him. It had been almost a compulsion. She wanted to understand more about how he worked, and why he wouldn’t consider renovating the theater. Finding out that he did do renovation projects had been eye-opening. He wasn’t a contractor who always came in swinging a sledgehammer to tear down the past to make way for contemporary buildings.

She felt shame wash through her. Dawson had achieved so much—he’d gone to college and earned the degree he wanted, including an advanced degree, and he’d started his own firm, employing people in the Sweet Tea community.

He wasn’t the enemy. But she had to find a way to work with him, to get him on board with saving the theater with her.

But now she had more questions about the one relationship she’d had in her life that had worked. At least she thought it had. Her love for Dawson had been the yardstick she’d used to measure all other men.

Dawson had loved her. She knew he had. She’d been as certain of him as she had ever been of anything. And she’d loved him with everything in her. She’d felt broken when he had made her choose music over him.
