That said, Ignatius was no man of the Middle Ages and by no means rejected the benefits of empirical science. He wrote, “Nature announces God . and the sciences, which clarify the laws of nature, even more so announce God. All the grand scholars, mathematicians and scientists, such as Newton, Leibniz, Necker, were not just Deists but loved Christianity.”38

Ignatius’s deep spirituality notwithstanding, there were other devout spiritual leaders who took exception to some of his teachings. One such personage was Bishop Theophan the Recluse (1815–94). Their disagreements might seem largely theological, the former having the belief that angels and the spirit possess corporeal elements, the latter only spiritual ones. However, in reality these differences were more defined by temperament: Ignatius was academically fastidious, while Theophan took a more paraphrastic approach, which sought contemporary relevance over accuracy, especially when it related to literary translations, not least that of the Philokalia. In particular, Theophan was keen for the laity to participate regularly in the services and sacraments of the Church. This, in his view, required the introduction of a modern simplified form of Old Church Slavonic rather than a modern translation into Russian, which he felt would diminish rather than enhance the language.
