Jared swore and watched Daniel disappear into his bedroom. It was Christmas Eve and they had spent the last two days not talking about their night of lovemaking. A trip to town had resulted in the tree festooned with lights, garlands and ornaments that now stood in front of the window, as well as books for Daniel and Chance, and an hour-long conversation between Daniel and the book shop owner on genealogy and how to go about getting started. The woman had been positively giddy when Daniel handed her a card and told her to get hold of him when she had more questions.

The trio had talked about everything but their changing relationship. Jared drained the remainder of his beer. It needed to be discussed. Soon. The idea of Daniel continuing to spend his nights anywhere but by him was quickly driving him insane. He’d known better. He shouldn’t have pressed Daniel into having sex, because the idea of Daniel having sex with, or even dating, anyone else was enough to get his blood moving. Jared tamped down his anger. Now wasn’t the time. Daniel hadn’t agreed to anything more than a night of sex.

“I’ll clean up what’s left of dinner. You go talk to him,” Chance said, kissing him lightly on the temple.

Jared nodded, returned the kiss then followed Daniel.

“Danny,” he said, knocking once on the partly-open door leading into the only other bedroom on the ground floor.

“What’s up?” Daniel asked. He was sitting in a plush chair in the corner of the room, book in hand.

Jared took a deep breath and prayed he wouldn’t screw anything up. “We need to talk about what happened and where we go from here.”

“There isn’t anything to talk about. I don’t think it’s a good idea to do it again,” Daniel said flatly, meeting Jared’s gaze momentarily before focusing on a point behind him.

Jared looked at his lover. His shoulder-length black hair was hanging loose and begged to have hands woven through it. Confusion meshed with need—lust with something he couldn’t put a finger on. It all told him the exact same thing…Daniel was lying to him and was most likely trying to lie to himself.

“It can’t be undone. Do you regret making love with us?” Jared asked.

“I don’t—I… Just forget it. Please. Can we just act like it never happened?”

“No, Danny, I can’t. I won’t. Because making love to you and holding you in my arms felt right. More than right, it was perfect. That glimpse of heaven everyone talks about when they meet their soulmate,” Jared replied. “Well, soulmates. Because I know Chance feels the same way.”

“Why now? Why did we have to have sex? Why did you have to drag me up to the middle of nowhere? I was fine before.”

“No, Danny, you were existing!” Jared shouted. Anger and pain threatened to overwhelm him. “You weren’t living. If you didn’t want to have sex at any point you could have—and should have—said no. Neither Chance nor I can read minds.
